From the Director - Let the fun begin! For a lot of people,
winter is a time to hunker down, sit by the wood stove and enjoy a slower pace of life. Well, nowadays, it is not always the case. The Massachusetts Lobstermen’s
Association has already had their Annual weekend. We are well underway with the fi nal
plans for the Maine Fishermen’s Forum and the Maine Legislature is still going strong, even though the Federal government has “shut down” for who knows how long. There is talk about off shore drilling and the whale issue is back again, so where do we begin?
Sometimes I feel that after so many
years, we go full circle once again. I can honestly say that I have been around this

industry long enough to be able to say this. There is a bill right now concerning the Alewife’s once again. After all of the work that has gone into the alewife restoration, we now have a bill called LD 1667 sponsored by Representative Zeigler of Montville, that is an “Act to Prohibit the Entry of Anadro- mous Fish Species into Sheepscot Pond for 3 Years and To Study the Consequences of the Presence of Anadromous Fish in Sheep- scot Pond. So in other words, they must be working with the bass fi shermen and sports fi shermen once again. With a new representative, it is a perfect opportunity to start this process all over again. This bill is listed with the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife instead of the Marine Resource Committee. By doing this, you would miss it if you are checking the Marine Resource Committee
CANADIAN FISHING NEWS The Canadian Coast Guard seeks
proposals for bulk oil removal from MANOLIS L.
From Canadian Coast Guard
GANDER, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR – The Government of Can- ada is taking action to protect the marine environment from spills and the threat of pollution. The Oceans Protection Plan is a $1.5 billion investment that is going towards further protecting our coasts and waters, and the recently proposed Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act will help address risks posed by problem vessels to safe navigation, the marine environment, public health and local economies. Scott Simms, Member of Parliament
for Coast of Bays – Central – Notre Dame, on behalf of the Honourable Dominic LeB- lanc, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard announced that in the coming months the Canadian Coast Guard
schedule. DELA has worked very hard to help promote the Alewife Association along with Representative Jeff Pierce who is also its founder. Sheepscot Pond is the center of alewife country. Over the years, Jeff Pierce and the Alewife Harvester’s Association have worked hard on many restoration proj- ects, a festival and many supporters of pro- moting a native fi sh back to its historical and traditional grounds. With the bait situation in the lobster industry, this resource is very important to us as well. We do not support this bill and hope that you feel the same way. DELA will be making our opinion known in Augusta.
During the holiday season, we ran
will be seeking proposals from qualifi ed marine salvage companies for bulk oil re- moval from the wreck of the Manolis L. The freighter sank in January 1985 near Change Islands in Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador.
In 2013, oil pollution was traced to the
wreck and ever since then, the Canadian Coast Guard Environmental Response team has routinely been on scene to ensure that no signifi cant threats to the public and environ- ment have occurred, by conducting regular monitoring, underwater hull surveys and annual maintenance to contain leaks from the damaged hull. A technical assessment in September
2016 recommended bulk oil removal from the Manolis L in order to reduce the potential risk of pollution that the vessel poses. The Request for Proposals anticipates

a little contest to promote DELA on our Facebook site. Our daughter, Christy Perce promoted the contest and kept track of the participants. It was a lot of fun with great re- sults. She had her daughter, Hanna draw the name of the winner, which included a DELA membership, hat and t-shirt. Our winner was Maurice Alley of Beals,(already a member) who in turn asked to give the membership to his son, Preston Alley of Beals. This is a wonderful way to start including our next generation as members of DELA. Welcome aboard, Preston! We thank you all for your participation! You will see that this year, we have
included the Maine Fishermen’s Forum seminar schedule for upcoming March 1 - 4th
. By posting the seminar schedule, it will
give you a better idea of which day you’d like to attend if you are going for the day.
There are still weekend packages left too, if you’d like to book a stay for the entire week- end. Chilloa and Mike Young, along with their daughter Loallee and the Forum Board of Directors put a lot of time and planning into this event and we would love to see you there. This is a wonderful opportunity to see all of your friends gathered in once place. I always look forward to seeing our members and sign new members each year. We are there to answer any of your questions and concerns that you may have for the Maine fi shing industry. A lot of our Associate members are also exhibitors, so stop by and say “Hi” to the whole gang. Have a great winter and we will be
seeing you soon. Please follow our website and Facebook site for the next meeting date. We are working on the best time and place for everyone with weather permitting this time of the year. Take care, Sheila
