COMMUNITY
A FESTIVAL WITH LOCAL FLAVOUR
The Surbiton Food Festival takes place over the first two weeks in May with a series of events to celebrate local food and flavours. Now in its sixth year, the festival has grown into a wide ranging series of events taking place across multiple venues with hundreds of people taking part.
Time & Leisure Junior spoke to Gemma Bull, Festival Coordinator, to find out a bit more. Gemma and her daughter Kitty have been involved with the festival since its inception.
What is the festival? The festival is a series of events during the first two weeks in May. There are main events on each weekend but there are dozens of smaller events taking place in and around Surbiton. The festival is food themed but it is all about community and fun, it is a chance to catch up with old friends over a burger, or meet new people and try new food all cooked by locals businesses.
What is the festival all about? The plan is to encourage small, local start up businesses giving them a platform to try something new. But we also want to involve
and engage the wider community in two weeks of fun and enjoyment.
What is on the agenda? The main events are the Seething Freshwater Sardine Festival; the Village Fete Weekend and the Sports Day.
The original idea behind the Village Fete was to hold a community picnic. It grew and turned into more of a Village Fete. We wanted to make use of the green spaces in Surbiton. St Andrews Square is a safe place. Within the square the kids can run around freely but there are volunteer marshalls on every gate.
There will be kids’ activities such as pasta necklace making and potato printing. There is a bouncy castle and live music in the square. It is just a really fun weekend.
The Sports Day is always great fun. Everyone should come down and try the sack race, the egg and spoon race or even the infamous drag race.
What else is going on during the Festival? We are still working on the festival timetable but there will be lots of smaller, pop up events that we can announce nearer the time. You can follow the updates at
surbitonfoodfestival.org or download the free festival app.
Come along, but also do get in touch if you want to get involved. Maybe you have a skill that you could share in a workshop or you want to help set up on the day. The whole event is about community and we encourage everyone to get involved.
