New scheme gets great response

Fifty-five new people were attracted to the Couch to 5K night

Looe Pioneers have recently started the popular Couch to 5k programme for 2018.

This NHS-endorsed fitness programme is specifically designed for new runners with no experience who want to start running or improve their health and well-being.

The first session which was held on January 30 attracted 55 new people to the club and continued on the following Thursday.

The programme, which is being led by Dianne Foster and chairman Guy Cooper, will be completed around Easter when the participants aim to complete a 5k course around Looe and/or run continuously for 30 minutes.

Mr Cooper said: ‘We knew from initial enquiries that the C25k programme would be popular but when 55 people arrived for the first session it was simply overwhelming.

‘Coupled with the already large group of regular runners, there were well over 110 people running.

‘It is great to see so many new people coming to the club wanting to make a difference to their health and well-being and the Looe Pioneers will be on hand to support everyone who comes along.

‘There is still time for anyone who is interested to join in.

A record 47 Looe Pioneers represented the town at the popular Newquay 10 race on Sunday.

The fast course and favourable weather conditions produced some excellent times and there were also a number of athletes running 10k distance competitively for the very first time.

There are only around three weeks left before the home Grand Prix race – the Looe (hillish and hellish) 10 miler. This will take place from the Milpool car park on Sunday, February 25.

Confirmed and registered places have already exceeded 400 so if you are interested in joining in this year, it is strongly recommended that you book

Ben Gummow, who took part in his first race and achieved a fantastic time of 50:04

soon to avoid disappointment as places continue to fill fast.
