Blazey given mighty scare in Charity Cup Quarter-Final

Polperro gave hot favourites St Blazey a mighty scare before losing out in a pulsating nine- goal quarter-final in the mist and mud of Killigarth. And Matt Pengelly’s side came desperately close to forcing an equaliser in the last seconds but Gilbert’s effort was cleared off the line. All credit to Blazey for hanging on, especially after playing the last 70 minutes with only 10 men after Ollie Deadman had been shown a straight red after

being judged to have held back Polperro striker Rob Spencer in a breakaway. But Polperro also earned huge respect for their performance. Despite being reduced to 10 men so early, St Blazey led 3-0 by half-time as two goals from Joe Stone and a Lee Whetter penalty seemed to put them in total command. But Polperro got the perfect start to the second half when Spencer fired in from distance in the first minute and nine minutes later, from a breakaway,

scored his first goal for the club to reduce the arrears to 3-2.

St Blazey were not deterred, though, with Morgan hitting goals in the 67th and 74th minutes to widen the visitors’ advantage again to a three- goal margin at 5-2. Polperro refused to lie down and responded with Gilbert firing in an 83rd minute free

Subs: Liam Faulkner, Joe White, Orson Thomas, George Delamare. Polperro Man of the Match: Dave Gilbert – two- goal, all-action display from the captain, leading from the front. So good that he would have stood out in the St Blazey side.
