Help keep 1902 lifeboat afloat
A fundraising dinner will help to keep a historic vessel on the water.
The Old Ryder Lifeboat was built in 1902 and served as the Looe Lifeboat until 1930.
In 1987, she was spotted in Weymouth when she was about to be burned during a beach clean-up. Fortunately she was rescued, restored and put on display, and eight years later she was gifted to the Polperro Heritage Museum.
‘Project Ryder’ was begun with the intention of bringing the Ryder back to her original seaworthy condition, and this ambition was realised in 1998.
The Ryder spends her winters at the C Toms and Son Boatyard in Polruan, and in the summer months she is on display in the water next to the Polperro Heritage Museum.
She is the only standard self-righting lifeboat in the country to be displayed afloat – but maintenance costs for the 116-year-old craft are high, says the Project Ryder team.
A fundraising dinner and quiz will be held at the Millpool Centre, Looe, on Sunday, March 18. To find out more, call 01503 272807.

Manager for homes site’s second phase
Barratt Homes has appointed Mike Mitchell to be site manager for the second phase of its development at the Barbican in Looe. The company will create 82 more homes on the site known as Penndrumm Fields, in addition to the 99 already constructed. The go-ahead for the second wave of housing was granted last year after several years of difficult discussions between the developer and the local authority.
Mike, who has 23 years’ experience within the industry, says his priority is to lay the foundations for a close-knit community alongside the bricks and mortar. ‘Having worked with Barratt for the past 17 years, working my way through different roles, I’ve developed an understanding for all aspects of the construction process – and it’s standing me in good stead at Penndrumm Fields,’ said Mike. ‘Work on these new homes is progressing well, and I’m eager to see it progress towards completion.’
