Sonoma: A City with Food as Rich as Its Past
hile in Sonoma, Maralin Fritz and I were able to participate in the Food and Wine Tour that is being offered to our guests at the upcoming Spring Management Meeting. Our first stop was an Indian Restaurant in Sonoma Square. Arlene, our tour guide ordered us some starters and began to tell us the history of Sonoma. “Long before Sonoma became popular for being one of the world’s best regions for growing wine, the land now known as Sonoma County was an area that was sought after by many different cultures,” she explained. With every mouthful of avocado chaat and ginger chicken, I found myself losing track of what Arlene was saying. The food was that good. “Shall I continue, are you interested

in the history?” Arlene asked. “Yes!” we replied eagerly. Soon after, that became our agenda for the afternoon. Arlene would order some food and a small glass of wine and we would listen to her detail the history of the land cradled between the Mayacamas and Sonoma Mountain ranges. By the time we reached Pangloss
Cellars, I know I heard Arlene begin to talk about General Vallejo and how he built Sonoma’s City Hall in the middle of the square but that was just as I placed an olive into my mouth that I will forever remember as the “best olive I have ever tasted.” Unlike other guest events from
previous years, where a cultural immersion is followed by lunch, this
event offers an integrated experience, where our guests can enjoy a diversity of eclectic cuisines, paired with local wines, while being immersed in the history, culture and architecture that is unique to the area. Maralin and I both agreed this a great recipe for a wonderful way to experience Sonoma.
