Through our therapy work, we provide an interactive, innovative learning format that actively engages horses in the work of human development and healing
The Way of the Horse is passionate about helping those with mental health challenges. Mental health awareness has come a long way in recent years, thanks in part to efforts by charitable organisations and to public discussions of mental health by those in the public eye, such as the recent Heads Together initiative spearheaded by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. However, despite these incredible initiatives, many of the 1 in 6 adults and 1 in 10 children who experience mental health difficulties will not receive the help they need. So our mission is to engage horses in
helping people to overcome their mental health challenges and to heal past traumas, so that they may lead fulfilled lives without the burden of mental illness. As anyone who works, enjoys or lives with horses well knows, there is nothing more healing and transformative than the spirit of the horse. As Sir Winston Churchill famously said “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” The Way of the Horse has
been helping children and adults with mental health and wellbeing issues for over two years. Many of those we support are from disadvantaged backgrounds and/ or have experienced significant trauma or abuse. To date we have helped over 100 children to overcome their psychological and developmental challenges. We also run many courses and therapy sessions for adults including anxiety, depression and domestic abuse recovery workshops. The centre was founded and is run by Dina Shale and a team
of dedicated staff, volunteers and horses! So far, our support has enabled:
A non-verbal autistic boy to find his voice A girl with a developmental disorder to begin to form sentences and engage more with her environment
Children who haven’t attended school in many months to return to education
Boys with ADHD to learn to focus and channel their energy
A woman who has been bereaved of a child to begin to heal
A woman with drug and alcohol issues to reduce her dependencies
Teenagers and adults with anxiety and depression to find ways to overcome their conditions
Children and adults who have suffered abuse and neglect to move forward positively with their lives
Through our therapy work, we provide an interactive, innovative learning format that actively engages horses in the work of human development and healing. Our methods teach personal empowerment, self-compassion, authentic communication, community building, mindfulness and overcoming psychological challenges. Often, we can provide routes to healing where traditional treatment pathways have failed. “The Way of the Horse has been my saving grace. I learned how to deal with
the negative energies in my life in safe and practical ways with the help of Dina and her wonderful ponies. Since the Way of the Horse, I have completed my exams, gone travelling and begun my journey of self-discovery and acceptance of who I am and what I have to offer the world.”
Student aged 16 “These sessions have given me a chance to relax and take my mind off my problems and help me cope... Dina has
given me strategies to overcome problems. I have learnt to always be yourself and love yourself for who you are. I have loved my sessions with Dina.” Student aged 15
The Way of the Horse relies upon philanthropic donations in order to maintain and function, to find out more about the incredible work, call Dina and her team at The Way of the Horse on 07714 269218 or email
