TENGOAL | Foreword

FOREWORD CHAIRMAN’S

T

he newspapers have recently reported that 2017 was the 11th wettest

summer on

record. This seems strange as my recollections of the

season are of warm summer days, a busy and bustling Clubhouse – no doubt thanks to some great menus from our new Clubhouse caterers Mosimann’s – and, most importantly, some superb polo on first-class grounds. Despite some pre-season uncertainty over the visa

situation, the Cartier

Queen’s Cup once again produced some fine sport from the 22-goal teams taking part, featuring some old friends of the Club and many new names too. It was marvellous to see Adolfo Cambiaso – a playing member at Smith’s Lawn for more than 20 years – return to his best form on The Queen’s Ground and deliver victory for his new patron, RH Polo’s Ben Soleimani, who received the coveted trophy from HM The Queen. Cartier’s support of this world-class tournament, spearheaded by Laurent Feniou, enables us to continue to attract the world’s best players as well as developing and maintaining superior playing surfaces at Smith’s Lawn, Flemish Farm and Coworth Park. Our oldest

tournament, the Royal

Windsor Cup saw victory for our most successful Club team in 2017, Andrey Borodin’s Park Place. They later added the Land Rover Duke of Cornwall to their tally and I understand this team is now planning a high-goal campaign in 2018, with the 10-goal star Hilario Ulloa. Andrey has learned his craft here at Guards Polo Club and we wish him well in the next stage of his polo journey. Recognising that playing polo is a journey could be considered a secret

12

of our success. Tournaments

ranging

from 0 goal to 22 goals, plus a regular schedule of chukkas, enable our members to develop their game, whatever their polo aspirations. Hildon has hosted prestigious tournaments at all levels and their arrival as sponsor of the 8-goal Archie David Cup has given this revered trophy a substantial boost. By generating renewed interest on and off the field of play – and by creating a varied array of youth polo, including the La Martina Varsity Polo – Guards Polo Club has developed a strong platform for its players to improve and progress their game. Good grounds are the key to a Club’s

success, so I am delighted to report that the Club’s Board is moving ahead on its innovative development plan to level grounds 4-6 and install drainage. With support from the Crown Estate and

approval from our President, we have begun the planning process following which work can begin. Thanks to the successful addition of Flemish Farm into our grounds schedule since 2016, we hope to limit any disruption to the 2018 tournament schedule. Therefore, I can sign off this foreword

and head into the Christmas season in good spirits. Your Club continues to focus on maintaining its position as one of the best clubs in the world.
