contemporary design schemes. Interior barn doors continue to be a strong design element.

Home automation and technology in the kitchen and throughout the home is increasing. Many projects include wiring and pathways for future integration. Internet connected appliances, especially those that are monitored for service, are trending upwards.

Induction cooktops and convection ovens are increasingly selected as energy efficient options in the kitchen. Microwave drawers are out pacing built-in microwave ovens, while high end projects are selecting multi-purpose speed ovens instead of microwave units.

As with kitchens, contemporary and transitional styled bathrooms will continue to overtake traditional design elements in bathroom design. Mid-century modern and Asian fusion elements will continue to trend upwards.

Vessel and pedestal sinks are phasing out in popularity with under mount vanity sinks returning as the understated functional choice. Trough sinks are an emerging bathroom trend for 2018.

Cabinetry style and colors reflect kitchen trends with shades of white, gray and blue continuing to be seen in bathroom design with white fixtures. Brushed brass and gold fixtures were introduced in 2017 and will continue a slow trend upward. Floating cabinetry, open shelving and linen storage are increasing, however we will see the demise of over the toilet cabinetry!

The elimination of large tubs, whirlpools and decks in bathrooms continues into 2018. Many projects will replace these with elegant freestanding tubs or eliminate them entirely in favor of large no-threshold showers. The development of products for no or low- threshold showers has greatly increased the viability of remodel options. Comfort, luxury and safety dominates 2018 bathroom design.

Keeping abreast of current trends allows homeowners and design professionals to work together to create projects with longevity and timeless appeal.
