NEW SCIENTISTS

WE CAUGHT UP WITH CHARLIE & BILLY FROM LOCAL BAND NEW SCIENTISTS TO DISCUSS THEIR LIVES SHOWS AND MUSICAL INFLUENCES AHEAD OF THEIR GIG AT THE WATERFRONT...

How did the band initially form? B: Robbie and I met each other a while back in a different band that didn’t quite work out but we became really good mates. C: Billy invited me to join as a guitarist which was brilliant and then asked if I knew any bassists- it is really rare to find a dedicated bassist in the area-so we put a status up on Facebook in the end and then Jasper messaged me to join. It sounds like the four of you came together in a really natural way, I take it you are all firm friends now? B: Yeah we all get on really well and when we rehearse we just jam out and then when we like the sound of something we decide that is going to be a song and I go off and sort the lyrics. C: I would say the process is quite organic- much like how we got together really- it just sort of happens! It helps to be on the same page when it comes to the creative process. It’s a beautiful thing! You guys have an EP coming out and really great official video out on Youtube already- how long has it taken you to get to this point? B: Te views for the video went up pretty quick which was a nice surprise and we had friends helping us out with sharing it online. C: We have all really been together

since March last year so it has all happened pretty quick. B: All of us have just been working really hard to get things done and make it happen. K: What is your preference when it comes to live shows, do you prefer the bigger venues around the city or do you like the more intimate “pub gig”? B: Personally, I prefer the bigger venues, with a proper stage and a bigger audience. C: Epic is really good for that because it is all really professional and the sound quality is really great. B: Te Waterfront is really good too though, that is the first venue we ever played in Norwich but Epic just has a certain feel to it that I really like. Playing in pubs is cool too but that is better when it is with all our friends. How did you guys come up with the name New Scientists? C: To be honest we couldn’t think of a name that suited for ages and we had a group chat about it that just got so tedious after a while. In the end Jasper came up with New Scientists after seeing it on that cover of the magazine. B: We just decided that would do and it just kind of stuck and has really worked and we all like it. Which genre would you say that New Scientist slot into? B: I would say we are going down the more Indie rock route, but not like the poser “hipster” Indie, we are more real and genuine than that. I like to be spontaneous and just go with the flow a lot of the time. C: I think it’s easy to see when a band is a bit more manufactured and processed and we don’t want to

be like that. Who are your biggest musical influences and heroes? C: When I first started playing guitar I was more into the bluesy rock and roll like Cream, Eric Clapton and Hendricks. Now I listen to more electro rock, I am a big fan of LCD Sound System and other stuff like that. B: I really love Nirvana, as everyone does, and I would say I am influenced by the Grunge movement for sure. I also really love Radiohead and look up to Tom York a lot. I understand you have a few live shows coming up that the fine people of Norwich need to know about? C: Te 27th January we have our EP launch at Epic studios and we are really excited for that, we are hoping it will sell out and we can’t wait to play live in such a great venue. B: We have some great acts supporting us (Hanks, Happy Coloured Marbles and Fears Cello) and we will be headlining. Plus, we are playing an acoustic set during the day on the 27th at Soundclash store on St Benedict’s street and anyone that comes to that gets a discounted ticket for Epic Studios so that is a nice little incentive for our fans.
