Puck’s Great Asheville Adventure.

story and photography by Heather Schulman

It’s been more than a year since we visited the Everglades with Puck. Our trip was featured in the Fall 2016 issue of The New Barker. This year, we were hoping to visit the Florida Keys with him, but changed our plans after Hurricane Irma. We were looking for a dog-friendly city within driving distance from Tampa. Asheville, North Carolina sounded per- fect, with the combination of cool weather, stunning views and an unlimited number of dog-friendly restaurants and breweries. The drive took us about 11 hours with several stops along the way for Puck’s potty breaks and to gas up the car. Upon our arrival at the Country Inn & Suites By

Carlson, Asheville Westgate, Puck was immediately greeted by the front desk staff. We were also handed a “Poopy Pouch” which included dog bags and a bag of treats. When we travel with Puck, we bring two free-

standing pet gates to block off areas to keep him from jumping, and a dog ramp. We currently own a Royal Ramps ramp which is made of high-density foam, lightweight and very easy to travel with. We make these provisions for Puck since his back surgery two years ago. Mike and I are both terrified that he may jump off or on something and reinjure himself. Country Inn & Suites is a midscale hotel that

charges a reasonable $50 pet fee. The hotel is in a great location, five minutes from downtown and less than nine minutes from The Biltmore Estates. Puck was exhausted after the 11-hour drive so we decided to head downtown without him. We stopped to visit the Asheville Pinball Museum, grabbed a quick bite to eat and enjoyed a beer at Urban Orchard Cider. The next morning we ate at Biscuit Head, a pop-

ular dog-friendly, Asheville-based eatery that always has a line out the door. Locals and tourists are drawn to the giant biscuits layered with southern staples like pimento cheese and fried chicken gravy. The food here was unbelievable (and of course, Puck had a small bite).
