LIVE24SEVEN // Local C LAI R E IN THE COUNT Y

New year... New start... New you!

Claire Thayers is dreaming of her promises for 2018

So, early January, and as you read this have you cancelled your gym membership, lit your cigarette, poured a double G&T and unwrapped your Galaxy caramel, whilst slumped on your sofa watching mindless rubbish on the TV?

Are you wishing you hadn’t made such ridiculous New Year resolutions – and wished you hadn’t told every man and his dog OR are you reading this after a fruitful yoga session, sipping on a mint tea, and nibbling on a nut roast, whilst reading a new self help book full of vigour and hope?

I am writing this before Christmas so I HOPE to be the latter… I REALLY hope I can do it this year and NOT fall of the wagon in week one (in truth, a week is very optimistic – usually, I have not only fallen off the wagon but fallen under the wheels by day 3!)

So how are we going to do this? How can we make 2018 different?

I think I may try a little bit of cosmic ordering. I know what I want… a partially sighted millionaire, to be 3 stone lighter, less wrinkles and a life in the sun, free from the worry of work. I think I will write a letter to myself 11.55pm on the 31st of December and post it to myself – let go of all the negativity, make some space in my life to allow the new in.

A dear friend of mine sat in my kitchen five years ago, when I lived in Cornwall and literally wrote down her wish list and can

you believe it… it worked for her. She found her Mr Right, and she is now married and living the dream, splitting her time between Gloucestershire and their villa in the sun and I own up, I am a little bit envious. I am still working 50-hour weeks, juggling work and life like a mad thing, and still on my own – no wonder I turn to food to ease the pain.

2018 HAS to be a year of change – no really… it HAS to be!

I think sometimes we keep ourselves busy, just to distract ourselves from facing up to the truth, classic avoidance and because of this we really shouldn’t be surprised when we find ourselves, depressed and filling up our car just as an excuse to buy a family bar of Cadburys and then after the sugar rush subsides find ourselves slumped over our keyboard.

1st of January 2018, I will get the new diary out (or open up Outlook) and I fully intend to block out some ‘me time’ - book on to some mindfulness sessions, sign up for some Zumba, empty the cupboards of chocolate and crisps and buy a SAD lamp. I would prefer a Caribbean cruise, but a lamp and a bottle of self tan will have to suffice.

By March I will be bouncing again… always do and this March, I will invest in a new outfit for the Cheltenham Festival as I will be a size 10, super fit, radiant and I WILL find my own Mr Right by the finishing post… and by 2020 I will be living in Spain, living the life, and writing my column from a beach café with a G&T - slimline tonic obviously!

Well – I can but dream…
