NEWS NEWS BITES CPD EVENT, SATURDAY 25TH NOVEMBER.
The relationship between equine vets and farriers took another giant step forward recently as equine vets gathered at theBFBAheadquarters, Stoneleigh Park, for aground-breaking farrier-led CPDevent. Mark CaldwellPhDFWCF guided a group of experienced equine vets through the forces acting on the hoof capsule and the ways in which they can be manipulated to address sub-optimal conformation and orthopaedic problems. The afternoon’s practical demonstration of assessing and shoeing ahorse with chronic lameness clearly illustrated the complexities and challenges facing both farriers and vets, and howco-operation between the two professions is central to managing these difficult cases. The day also provided opportunities for
collaborative discussion around the opportunities for developing integrated inter-disciplinary case management as part of day to day veterinary practice. Mutual respect and effective, direct communication between vets and farriers were agreed to be essential components
REDWINGS REMEMBERS MOMENTOUS AMERSHAM RESCUE 10 YEARS ON
RedwingsHorseSanctuary is lookingforward toaspecial year of commemorationwhenit marks the 10-yearanniversary ofone of themost notorious rescues in the charity’s history. On9th January2008, ateamof32Redwings’
staff responded to an urgent call for helpfromthe RSPCAto assist with the rescue of over100horses anddonkeys foundlivingin horrific conditions at Spindle Farm, inAmersham,Buckinghamshire. Theanimalswere discovered in varyingstates
ofemaciation, coveredin liceand sufferingfrom
overgrownfeet.The carcasses of over30horses and donkeys,whohadsadly succumbedto illness or injury before their plightwasuncovered, laid aroundthem. Simply put, itwas theworst case of neglect
Redwings’ rescue teamshadever seen. This case also sawthe first effective use of new
powers under theAnimalWelfareAct2006, which enabled the removal of animals fromsituations where they are suffering or are highly likely to suffer as authorised byaveterinary surgeon, to ensure every single horse anddonkeywas transported to places of safety as quickly as possible. Redwings initially took 21 of themost ill and
vulnerable equines back to itsHorse Hospital at its Norfolk headquarters forimmediate treatment. Over the next fewyears, the charity
would offerasafe foreverhome to60horses anddonkeys fromSpindle Farm, aswell as six foals born to rescuedmares. Despite their terrible ordealsand extensive
veterinary treatment, an incredible58Amersham survivors remain inRedwings’ care 10 years on–46horses anddonkeys are enjoying life at theSanctuary,while afurther 12 have been rehomed to lovingGuardianhomes through the charity’sGuardianship Scheme. James Gray, theowner of Spindle Farm,was sentencedto sixmonthsimprisonment, plus an

additionaltwomonths for later abscondingfromcourt, ordered topay costs of£400,000andbannedfrom keepinghorses for life–themaximumpenalty available to the court for nine charges of causingunnecessary suffering toanimals andtwocharges of failingto protectanimals frompain, injury, sufferinganddisease. His son,James Jr,was also convictedof
identical charges (althoughhewould later be acquitted oftwocharges) andwas sentenced to an 18-month supervisionorder, whileJames Gray’s wife, Julie,andtwodaughters JodieandCordelia were also foundguilty oftwocounts of failing to protect animals with each ordered toundertake 150hours of community
service.Thefamilywas banned fromkeepinghorses for 10 years. Redwings will be remembering the landmark
rescueand celebrating the survivors withaspecial series of activities andevents throughout2018, including the launchofanewfundto help care for the Amershamhorses anddonkeys for the next 10 years. Supporters will be able to purchase exclusive
