CAREERS
THE LARGEST PROVIDER OF FURTHER AND HIGHER EDUCATION IN WILTSHIRE.
W
iltshire College was formed in 2000 and is now, following the merger with Salisbury College in January
2008, the largest provider of further and higher education in Wiltshire. Since joining the College as Active Principal in
2014, Amanda Burnside, nowPrincipal, has been the guiding hand in bringing the College forward to its present position with its excellent reputation for quality provision, innovation and student care. This has nowculminated in the College receiving a ‘Good’ grade following an Ofsted visit in 2015. Spanning the county of Wiltshire, the College
consists of four main campuses at Chippenham, Lackham, Salisbury and Trowbridge, as well as three smaller outreach centres in Corsham, Devizes and Warminster. The College also boasts adedicated motorsport facility based at Castle Combe race track. With more than 3,000 16-18 year old full-time
students, 7,500 part-time adult learners over the age of 19 and 750 university level students, Wiltshire College is an exciting place to study! Welcoming learners of all ages and abilities,
the Wiltshire College ethos is that education should be available to all who can benefit from it. The College provides education and training from entry level, helping students to learn, develop and prepare themselves for independent living, work or higher level courses. The College also welcomes pre-16 learners via
it’s School Links provision, providing learners with vital links to vocational options which enable them to access further education which may not be possible through normal schooling channels. The programmes offered in this area give young people at school the opportunity to gain skills, knowledge and experience in arange of practical subjects,
preparing them not only for future study, but for successful employment and life beyond College. The vocational courses are hands-on and practical, delivered in industry standard facilities, helping learners to prepare for their chosen career path in the future. Students who successfully complete their Schools Links programme, often achieve places on full-time study programmes or apprenticeships at College once they finish school -this enables them to progress into successful employment and some on to further study in Higher Education. At University level, students can choose from full
and part-time HNCs, HNDs, Foundation Degrees and Full Honours degrees, delivered in partnership with the University of Bath, Royal Agricultural University, Bath Spa University, Bournemouth University and the University of Greenwich. Wiltshire College is completely aligned with
the local economy, thereby ensuring the courses are in line with what businesses need and want. Working closely with thousands of local and regional employers, the College providesawide range of professional and vocational qualifications as well as work-place learning and bespoke training packages, designed to enhance business staff skill sets and add to their continual professional development. Wiltshire although rural, is adynamic and
growing county which is evidenced by the significant growth in engineering courses at the College’s Chippenham campus. In addition, in order to meet the demand in the south of the county for science skills, the College is introducing six foundation degrees in 2020, in conjunction with Bournemouth University. Earlier this year, the College was awarded £22 million government funding to improve Salisbury and Lackham campuses. The funding will enable aLife Sciences and Engineering Centre to be built in Salisbury,
while Lackham campus will have an Agricultural Technology Centre and ahigher education centre delivering more degrees and higher level courses. The College is alsoamajor provider of
apprenticeships, working with well-known employers around the region. The main message the College conveys to parents and young people is that apprenticeships are aviable alternative to university and provide many young people with job security and rewarding careers in Wiltshire. They are agreat alternative to traditional learning, as apprenticeships give young and mature learners alike, the opportunity to earn as they work alongside experienced staff in the workplace to gain nationally recognised qualifications. Wiltshire College also has adedicated
resettlement team for those in the Royal Navy, Army or Air Force looking to retrain and make the transition back into civilian life and provides bespoke training packages designed to make the most of Enhance Learning Credits (ELC), Standard Learning Credits (SLC) Individual Resettlement Training Costs (IRTCs) or established training courses.
