FUNDRAISING – Summer savings

Burgers, booze & bakes From Facebook

Refreshment stalls at summer fairs are always lucrative – cut costs, without compromising on quality, thanks to wholesaler Booker

B

eer and Pimm’s tents, barbecues, and tea and cake stalls are a must for any summer fair – not only will they form a social hub, but

they will also be some of the best earners at your event. Beyond your fair, the summer term is ripe with food-based fundraising opportunities, from weekly ice-cream sales to hotdogs for the end-of-term disco. PTA+ has been working with Booker

since 2012, to help PTAs stock up for less. Sign up for a cash-and-carry account and you’ll pay wholesale prices (usually only available to businesses) on branded and quality own-brand goods. Booker is the biggest food and drink

wholesaler in the UK, with 172 branches. Once you’ve registered for your account, Booker will invite you along to your local store and will issue your PTA with not just one, but four, Booker cards.

What does Booker sell? No summer fair is complete without a barbecue, and the key to success is using quality meat – not only will the amazing smells wafting around your fair draw people in, recommendations from ketchup-smeared fairgoers will, too! The range of premium-quality burgers sold by Booker includes traditional, chicken, vegetarian and halal, while sausages

include pork or beef. You can also pick up burger boxes, napkins, plastic cups and all manner of condiments. We know from your feedback that one

of the biggest money-spinners out there is the Pimm’s and beer tent. Well, Booker stocks a vast range of alcoholic beverages, as well an extensive range of soft drinks. And don’t forget your tea and coffee. Plus, if you need to bulk-buy sweets for stall prizes – or you’re looking for great value ice pops for after-school summer sales – then head to Booker.

Sale or return Don’t worry about cartons of apple juice exploding in the PTA shed over the summer holidays, either – if you have any leftover non-perishable goods then Booker offers a sale-or-return option. The only stipulation is that packs are complete, haven’t been opened and are returned (with your invoice), within a reasonable timeframe from the purchase date.

How do you sign up? Registering for a Booker account is easy: simply email us at booker@pta.co.uk stating the name and full address of your school, and we’ll get in touch with Booker on your behalf. You’ll be ready to start shopping within just two days.

Jo Ballantine: ‘We tend to buy sweets and drinks from Booker for the tuck shops. They sometimes have a good discount corner for packaging bits. It’s useful to be able to buy everything in one place when we are strapped for time.’

Hazel Li: ‘We bought ice pops from Booker last summer, and sold them for 20p with a 15p profi t. Kids loved them, but we needed to be organised and have enough volunteer freezer space. Also, just ahead of our summer fun day we managed to get a load of cheap crisps as they were close to their best-before date. And also a box of Freddos for prizes, as they had a short date as well.’

Melanie Irvin: ‘We tend to use Booker to buy chocolate bars and sweets for the pick ‘n’ mix to sell at discos and fairs.’

Amanda Read: ‘We bought our burgers, sausages, bacon and rolls for our summer fete and Christmas market. We also use it for sweets for the tuck shop at our disco/movie night.’

Judy Emanuel: ‘We buy sweets, catering roll, cups, napkins, ketchup, soft drinks cans, coffee and tea from Booker.’

Kathleen Middleton: ‘We have a Booker account and use it mainly for hot and cold drinks. They’ll also donate goods for PTA events if you give the manager a letter from your school or PTA.’
