Groovy Grove Fest!
campout. We sold pitches in May for £22 each, with 54 available. These sold out within days, and we had a reserve list in case anyone cancelled. We also charged £5 per adult for a limited number of day-entry tickets, with children admitted free of charge. We encouraged campers to bring
a picnic lunch, but also had an ice-cream van on site, from which We had a demonstration from a local
dance school, a lesson in football skills for the children from two members of staff, and various games including electronic tag and extreme frisbee. Following a busy afternoon we lit the barbecue and sold hot dogs, and chilli with tortillas (with vegetarian options also available). The food cost us £1.50 per person and we charged £2.50. After dinner we held a disco in our
sports hall, with live music provided by a local band. All the day-ticket
guests then left and the campers were asked to be back at their tents by midnight to appease the neighbours! We served bacon and egg rolls the
next morning – a parent who keeps hens donated the eggs, and our Headteacher cooked the bacon rolls! All food was pre-ordered in advance, which reduced wastage. By 10:30am on Sunday all the campers were heading home. There was a lot of organising required,
from planning and marking up pitches, to ordering and cooking food, as well as organising the entertainment. But it was worth it for a fantastic event, and we had a steady stream of adults and children telling us what a great time they were was amazing. As soon as the weekend was over we were being asked about next year – a sure sign that everyone had enjoyed themselves!’ Jo Hall, PTA Chair, Grove Wood Primary School, Rayleigh, Southend-on-Sea (630 pupils)
