Christmas Glamour Sally’s Tips for Festive Lips

If, like me, you prefer a bold lip and feel and look ‘under the weather’ without it, here are a few tips to keep your seasonal smile in place throughout the festivities! As a regular habit, either use an old toothbrush or one of the many lip

exfoliating products available to remove dry flaky bits. Then, every night, just before you depart to the land of nod, apply a good layer of salve so that is can get to work whilst you sleep. 1. Give up smoking......... Smokers lips can be spotted a mile off. Back in

the day, I was a champion smoker, so if I can do it – anyone can! 2. Use ‘Burt’s Bees’ lip salve BOOTS/SUPERDRUG at night to keep

lips moist. A beeswax based salve or balm is best. Avoid anything Vaseline based as whilst these provide initial relief – they promote longer term dehydration. 3. Apply a clear lipstick base to the outline of the lips to stop feather-

ing of the colour into the surrounding skin. Note that a base is not the same as a balm or a treatment, or products designed to moisturise, hy- drate or anti-age…… Use the latter at night by all means, but absolutely not before the application of a vibrant lipstick…..otherwise you may end up looking more like The Joker! BODY SHOP ‘lip line fixer’ is a good neutral and waxy lip liner base.

Apply this on – or just outside of the lip line. Whilst this may not be visi- ble, this is the most important part of lipstick application, which stops lipstick bleeding and feathering. Go out and buy one of these from Body Shop in Market Walk immediately! 4. Then apply a coloured lip pencil to the lip line (most brands, includ-

ing cheaper ones are fine) Do not go outside the natural lip line and use a colour which closely matches your chosen lipstick. 5. As an alternative to steps 3 and 4 – use an Estee Lauder double

wear coloured lip pencil AUSTINS. This pencil does a good job of outlin- ing and stopping feathering and bleeding in just one step.

6. Look for high pigment lipsticks,

which have a rich colour when tested on the hand and leave a slight stain when wiped off. Cheaper range lipsticks have come on hugely in recent years and my favourite ranges are ‘Collection 2000 Vol- ume Sensation’, ‘Miss Sporty Perfect Colour’ Sleek and ‘Revolution Boots and Superdrug both do brilliant inexpensive make- up Ranges. 7. Apply the lipstick directly from the

tube - inside and up to the coloured pencilled line and blot the entire lip with tissue. 8. Apply another layer of lipstick from the tube and use a lip brush to

ensure adherence and to give a sharp and professional finish and blot the inside of the lips only. 9. All set for the whole day! 10. If drying out occurs, or you feel in need of a little ‘refresh’, carry

one of the many Balm Stains, which are available in most ranges, from the cheapest to the most expensive, to apply over the top. These pro- vide hydration, sheen and a bit of a top up stain and can be applied

quickly and discreetly and no mirror is necessary! Sally Henley
