Welcome to
Christmas 2017 in Newton Abbot
...your family guide to the festive season
This year, Newton Abbot Town Council and the Mid-Devon Advertiser series (MDA) brings to you once again its glossy festive magazine to highlight all the Christmas events going on throughout the town.
Browse through this year’s Christmas book to
find some great shopping ideas from high street names to the smaller independent retailers not forgetting your market traders. Whether it be things for the home, a touch of glamour, gift ideas or the all-important Christmas fare, Newton Abbot has it all.
The Christmas Light Switch On will take place at St Leonard’s Clock Tower on Saturday,
November 25. Father Christmas, who will be accompanied by the mayor, town crier and carnival royalty will switch on the dazzling Christmas lights.
This will light up the town beautifully, welcoming shoppers, visitors and business
people alike to the town’s Christmas festivities. Newton Abbot will be buzzing on its three Late Night Shopping Wednesdays that will again include the mayor’s charity
event – the Victorian Evening on Wednesday, December 6.
Santa will be in his grotto on the
Wednesday evenings of December 6, 13 and 20 and selected Saturday mornings.
So come along for some festive fun and great Christmas shopping.

fromSally WELCOME to this year’s edition of the Newton Abbot Christmas Magazine, produced and designed by the lovely team at the Mid-Devon Advertiser. This edition features oodles of
Christmas ideas, giving inspiration for the home, for entertaining and gifts for all the family. We have also included details of the popular late night shopping events and December weekend town centre entertainment. In addition to the ever-popular
Victorian charity evening, the Lantern Parade and the Christmas Street Fayres, I am delighted to welcome the Newton Abbot Rock Choir to the town centre and very much looking forward to hearing the choir perform at the Mayor’s Carol Service, which this year is being held in the Market Square. I have also invited all four local Rock Choirs to join together to sing at the Clock Tower, so a warm welcome to the Plymouth, Torquay and Teignmouth Rock Choirs, which will be joining the Newton Abbot home side for an al fresco performance at lunchtime on Sunday, December 10. Before we get on to our late night
shopping events we have to switch on the lights! As has become the tradition, Father Christmas will be doing the honours and I know that he’s looking forward to meeting the children when he arrives on his carnival sleigh on Saturday, November 25. He’s also looking forward to the firework finale which will be even bigger than in previous years. Once the lights have been switched on, the crowds will be able to have a bit of a photo opportunity and view the Christmas floats, which will be parked on the other side of the tower and then make their way to Highweek Way, where there will be a fine view of the fireworks. Newton Abbot town centre is a
great place to ‘come over all Christmassy’ and so I do hope that you make the most of the shops, the growing hair, beauty and grooming offer (for him and for her) and the whole host of eateries and pubs which will be ready to welcome you this Christmas. Don’t forget that in addition to the
great public transport links, we also have a brilliant Shopmobility and Ring and Ride service, making Newton Abbot a doddle to access. And there’s more! Parking is free every Sunday and this year, we have free parking from 4pm in many of TDC car parks for the late night shopping Wednesdays! See you in town!
