CHRISTMAS GIN

Christmas is the perfect excuse to dabble in the gin cupboard, but it's not just tonic that pairs perfectly with this crystal-clear spirit. We enlisted the help of Managing Director at The Shops at Dartington and gin enthusiast, Barbara King, to shake up some special gin- based cocktails sure to impress your guests.

We distill our own Elmhurst Gin on site using the Still on the Move from Devon Distillery and the gin's distinctly herby fl avour profi le opens it up to a whole world of magical mixers.

A simple Elmhurst Gin and tonic is my all-time favourite drink, but if celebrating, there is nothing like a Martini – I like a 5 to 1 ratio of vermouth so the complexity of the gin comes through and the vermouth just adds a twist, as does a curl of lime peel.

For a really refreshing gin-based alternative drink, especially if the gin has citrus overtones, I like it with Luscombe Sicilian lemonade or grapefruit tonic, which is equally refreshing.

One of the more unusual gin-based cocktails I have experimented with, and it's not for the fainthearted, is the Breakfast Martini. Try blending 50ml gin, 15ml each of lemon juice and Cointreau, and 1 tsp of Elmhurst Gin and tonic marmalade, and serve with an orange twist.

For a warming gin cocktail, the Ginger Ricky is a good one, using a good glug of gin, a squeeze of lime juice, plenty of ice, topped up with a fi ery hot ginger beer and served with a couple of lime wedges. If you really want to push the boat out, decorate with a wedge of fresh pineapple.

Finally, I pick a couple of small mint leaves from the garden and add to the gin and elderfl ower fi zz, adding plenty of ice for a sparkling treat.

WHAT WILL YOUR BLEND BE?
