District Councillor Report Local Government Reorganisation!
At last, Sajid Javid, the Government’s Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, has issued a statement that says he is ‘minded’ to implement the proposal for restructuring local government in Dorset into two unitary councils. The Dorset County Council will be disbanded.
Of the two new councils, one would consist of the present councils of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. The other council would consist of the rest of Dorset – (East Dorset District, North Dorset District, Purbeck District, West Dorset District and Weymouth and Portland District) and this is the Council that would include the Parish of Corfe Mullen. This new council would be comprised of the rural area of Dorset and would stretch from St. Leonards and St. Ives in the East to Lyme Regis in the West (60 miles) – from Portland in the South to Gillingham in the North (50 miles). The details of how this large area will be governed has yet to be worked out, but I imagine the ‘headquarters’ will probably be in Dorchester.
This suggestion from Sajid Javid is now out for consultation and representations about this suggested reorganisation can be made to him up to
8th January 2018, after which he will make his fi nal recommendation to Parliament for its approval.
