kitchen, because cooking is just as creative and imaginative an activity as drawing, or wood carving, or music.” — Julia Child

“Some people like to paint pictures, or do gardening, or build a boat in the basement. Other people get a tremendous pleasure out of the

Who doesn’t enjoy the finer things in life? Love, laughter, wine, food, art and music—you choose your order of priority—they are the things that truly make life worth living. November is all about such things and we’ve

made an effort to fill our pages with some of the best in those categories that Southern California has to offer. There are tons of events that make up the month’s schedule outside of the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, we figured that you’ll already have made your plans for that day (if you haven’t, check your local LGBTQ Center, don’t spend it alone!), so we included many of the other foodie fun that takes place around SoCal on page 23. Get out of the house and enjoy a festival or three, there’s a plethora: From ramen to barbeque, beer to wine and whiskeys. There is something for everyone to enjoy in every major city we serve. Don’t want to leave the house? Get it delivered… And on page 54, we have the “what’s what” of that. On the music front, we had the chance to chat

with Kelly Clarkson, the woman who burst on the scene by dramatically winning the inaugural season ofAmerican Idol. She’s a down to earth, kind of woman, who possesses a wicked sense of humor...she had me laughing the whole conversation. We discussed her new album and what it’s taken for her to manage a successful career, not always easily done as she admitted, “Everything around me was so chaotic. To throw a 19-year-old, well actually I was 20 when I won, to put a 20-year-old girl in charge of a corporation, actually several, running them and touring the world and having to make decisions…To be the head of all of that was a lot of pressure. I think if I had to tell myself anything, it would be to just relax and let go of control.” Meaning of Life is her latest effort and as I told her, it’s still the Kelly we all know and love, but

there is definitely something in there, more than before. Her vocals are as powerful as they have ever been, but she’s calmer and more settled in her voice and there’s a sense of maturity that is obvi- ous and enjoyable. I can’t wait to see her tour once she’s done withThe Voice, where she’s dispensing advice like the wise woman she’s become. And no, she wasn’t “throwin’ shade” atAmerican Idol. Remember? They actually cancelled the series and that’s the moment whenThe Voice came a callin.’ Another musical note that we couldn’t pass up

was in the new opera by Laura Kaminsky, Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed,As One. Truly pow- erful, this contemporary chamber opera is striking in every way possible. The powerful libretto arrived on my desk first, which I poured over long before even hearing the stunning vocals, as sung by Baritone Kelly Markgraf and Mezzo-soprano Blythe Gaissert. The story of Hannah is stripped bare as it illustrates the journey of her transition with empathy and humor. Majestic and deeply personal, it’s an emotional story about acceptance of self that anyone with a heart can relate to. It’s truly one of the most breathtaking works I’ve seen and why music is the most powerful tool for change we possess. There is so much more to indulge in inside these

pages, so take a moment to read your way through. Hopefully, you’ll learn something about the life around you and maybe even a little about yourself.

Happy November! Joel Martens,Editor in Chief
