idea born out of a candlelight vigil held in 1999 to highlight the yet-to-be solved 1998 murder of Rita Hester in Allston, Mass. It continues today as a way to underscore the inordinate and alarming violence (including murders) faced by those individuals who are simply being their authentic selves. Not only does the larger LGBQ community need to recognize the unique needs of the transgender community, but we must also face the desperate need to ensure their safety. To bring awareness, each year the Transgender Day of Remembrance marks the month with a candlelight vigil, march and program to remembers those lost due to anti-transgender hate and violence. This year’s event is taking placeMonday, November 20, at 6 p.m. beginning at the San Diego LGBT Center, 3909 Centre Street, with participants marching through Hillcrest, ending at the San Diego AIDS Memorial on Normal Street. For more information or questions about how you can support the Transgender community, contact The San Diego LGBT Center by calling 619.692.2077, emailing trans@thecentersd.org or by going to thecentersd.org.
