Reined Cow Horse

Gorrell Pilots Plain Catty to the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Title

What a year for Jake Gorrell, of Hanford, CA. He achieved Million Dollar Rid- er status in August, and then rocked the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Finals fence work in Fort Worth, Texas, on Saturday, October 14, scoring a stupendous 225 to clinch his first Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Championship.

Riding Plain Catty (Bet Hesa Cat x Miss Plain Plain x Just Plain Colo-

nel), bred and owned by Kevin Cantrelle, Raymond, CA, Gorrell scored a total 657.5 on three events (214 herd/218 rein/225 fence) and walked away with a check for $125,000 and a ton of prizes. “I knew we had to be big,” Gorrell said, describing his feelings coming into the third phase of competition, the fence work. An early lead from eventual Reserve Champion Zane Davis and another Bet Hesa Cat-sired horse, Bet Hes Black (x Soula Jule Forever x Soula Jule Star) held up for the majority of the finals. Gorrell and Plain Catty were 17th in the draw. They took the lead and never relinquished it. Life may be about the journey, but sometimes one stop along the way will eclipse all others. That’s what happened to Brad Lund and Ima Smart Catt, when they won the Futurity CINCH Intermediate Open. Their composite score of 652 in the three events of herd work, rein work and cow work, earned them $30,000. Ima Smart Catt (WR This Cats Smart x Shiney Patrona x Shining Spark) is owned by Renee Cudd.

“This is unbelievable, but it really is about the journey. You start them as

2-year-olds and you really get to know them, and this mare, she’s just got a big heart,” said Lund, La Cygne, KS. “I’m real fortunate that I’ve had good horses all year and good help all year and very good owners.” Clayton Edsall rode Bet He Sparks (Bet Hesa Cat x Sparking Train x

Shining Spark) for owner K&L Phillips, LLC, to a score of 651.5 to be the reserve champions. They earned $20,000. Something a lot like real good - that’s how Myles Brown described win-

ning his second championship at the 2017 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. Rid- ing Miss Scarlets Cat, Brown marked a 645.5 to win the Limited Open and $15,514. This win came just two days after the duo won the Futurity Level 1 Limited Open and $8,520 with a composite score of 651. The duo also placed 8th in the Intermediate to earn and additional $5,500. “It was fun,” Brown said. “I was real happy with my horse. She was real good.” A score of 641 resulted in a tie for the reserve, which paid $11,247 to

each horse. They were Metallic Chrome Cat (Metallic Cat x Teletrona x Little Trona) owned by Kirk Johnston and ridden by Clay Volmer and, Unos Blue Lightening (Uno What Time It Is x Miss Vibrant Chex x Nu Chex To Cash) owned by Julie Gibbons and ridden by Dustin Mills.

Reserve champion in the Level 1 Limited Open was Sinful Merada (Cats Merada x Sinful Style) owned by Cowan Select Horses, LLC, and ridden by Matt Turner who marked a 638 to win $6,390. For full results, visit www.nrcha.com. w
