MM Fertility

When nature needs a hand…

Even if you found it easy to get pregnant the first time, you can still have problems second time around. Could reflexology be the solution?

When Carrie Wilson, a 36-year-old mother of two, decided to try for a third child, she never dreamt for one second that she would have problems conceiving. ‘When my husband and I decided to try for babies one and

two,’ Carrie told MM, ‘I got pregnant within a few months of trying. So, last year, when we decided to add to our family, we just expected it to happen literally overnight. I never thought for a second that I would go a full year without falling pregnant and I became really stressed out by the whole situation. In the end, my husband and I had to go to a fertility expert and, fortunately, we were able to finally conceive. It really was one of those ‘can’t believe this could happen to us’ situations.’ Amazingly, what happened to Carrie and her husband Ben is

actually very common. When you’ve had a baby - or two - it can be easy to think that you can get pregnant practically at will. But, sadly, just like Carrie, many women find it difficult to get pregnant a second or third time when they had no difficulty before! The reasons why this happens can be many and varied. Age, for example, can be a major factor since fertility levels tend

to drop dramatically around the age of 35. Irregular ovulation is another common cause and is, in fact, the

number one reason why women find it difficult to get pregnant a second time. Secondary fertility issues can also be a problem. Trauma

experienced during a first or second pregnancy, or lifestyle changes, such as increased levels of stress, may also make it difficult for a woman to conceive. One of the most common forms of treatment for couples who

find it difficult to have a child is in vitro fertilisation – more commonly referred to as IVF – but, according to acclaimed

reflexologist, Barbara Scott, author of Reflexology for Fertility, many couples are quite often sent down the route of IVF without practitioners having explored some of the simple and more straightforward tests and forms of treatments that can more easily identify and remedy the issues. ‘What many couples aren’t aware of,’

Barbara told MM, ‘are the low success rates associated with IVF and, indeed, the difficulties involved in actually undertaking a cycle of IVF, which can be demanding on so many levels.’ Over the last few years, Barbara has seen an increasing number

of clients coming to her seeking an alternative to treatments such as IVF. She firmly believes that reproductive reflexology can be the answer for many. ‘Increasingly, many couples are now finding that, once they

make the decision to start a family, all is not as straightforward as they thought it might be,’ she continues. ‘We now have one in six couples in the UK and Ireland experiencing difficulties of some kind when trying to get pregnant. And, in addition to this, most of the medical investigations focus almost solely on the women, when what we know is that fertility issues affect men just as much as women. Statistically, causes are usually one third male, one third female and one third joint, which means, that couples have equal responsibility in taking care of their fertility health and well-being. ‘Over the years, I’ve seen many couples, who have undergone many expensive (and exhausting) cycles of IVF, and when we >
