Are you a fan of milk-alternative drinks? Well, read on… because you may be at of risk iodine deficiency, according to the findings of a new study in the British Journal of Nutrition. In the first study of its kind, researchers from the University of

Surrey examined the iodine content of 47 milk-alternative drinks (including soya, almond, coconut, oat, rice, hazelnut and hemp, but excluding those marketed specifically at infants and children) and compared it with that of cows’ milk. Researchers discovered that the majority of milk-alternative

drinks did not have adequate levels of iodine, with concentration levels found to be around two per cent of that found in cows’ milk.

Don’t suffer in silence, doctor urges Irish women!

Nearly three out of four women in Ireland - 70.2 per cent - experience the painful debilitating effects of vaginal dryness at some stage, according to new research on behalf of Regelle. In the survey, thirty-two per cent of sufferers said this common condition affected their confidence, while 41 per cent of women said that the vaginal dryness caused painful sex. As a result, 45 per cent said they avoided sex altogether. Alarmingly, however, 59 per cent of sufferers don’t seek help from

their GP or healthcare professional, largely due to embarrassment and lack of awareness. Regelle’s Irish research showed that 30 per cent of sufferers here did not consider vaginal dryness serious enough to seek treatment for, even though one in seven women - fourteen per cent - did not know the reason for their symptoms.

Graco’s research also showed that parents only manage to have a relaxing bath once every eight months, with two fifths saying that they only get to put their feet up once a week!

Cooling treatment reduces epilepsy in children

Cooling babies deprived of oxygen at birth can reduce the number of children who develop epilepsy later in childhood, according to a new study published in the journal Epilepsia. It is known that newborn babies who suffer perinatal asphyxia may develop permanent brain injury resulting in cerebral palsy or other conditions, like epilepsy, but now, a research team at the University of Bristol, led by Marianne Thoresen, Professor of Neonatal Neuroscience, has developed and delivered cooling treatment, known as therapeutic hypothermia, for newborns who suffer a lack of oxygen during birth. The research found that babies, born after 2007, who received the cooling treatment, had much less epilepsy than before cooling treatment was introduced.
