New study reveals truth behind marital conflict over money
A new study examining the role of financial personalities in marital conflict has suggested that perceptions, rather than facts, are the root of disagreement. Researchers from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Utah in the USA investigated the impact of financial personalities and communication on relationship conflict and found that, for men, having a wife whom they perceived as a spender was the top predictor of financial conflict while, for women, having a husband who viewed them as such was the largest contributor to financial conflict. These results were, however, purely dependent on perception and had no connection with real spending habits. The study also found that men perceived having more children as the second significant factor that led to financial conflict whereas, for women, a lack of financial communication was seen as impacting the chances of financial conflict.
Too much sugar may
harm men's mental health A new report has found that eating too much sugar may also increase men's long-term risk of mental health disorders. Researchers from the Institute of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London found that men who consumed more than 67 grams of sugar daily from sweetened foods and beverages were much more likely to develop anxiety, depression and other common mental disorders after five years, compared with men with a lower daily sugar intake. Previous studies have also indicated that there may be a link between high sugar intake and increased risk of depression, though lead author, Anika Knüppel, and her team noted that researchers have suggested that this association may be down to ‘reverse causation’, ie, the idea that low mood actually leads to higher sugar intake!
