PINEHURST, N.C. -- The Old Dominion women’s golf team placed third at the Pinehurst Chal- lenge and set a new program record for a 54-hole score with an 859 team score at the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina this week.

“I am glad that our program-best

score belongs to this particular team, because it is a great group,” said second-year head coach Mallo- ry Hetzel. “You have to play well to finish a tournament under par and it was definitely a collective effort.”

The record-breaking performance shattered the previous record of 872 by 13 strokes, set at the UNCW Se- ahawk Classic in the spring of 2012.

Following the first round early Monday, the Monarchs sat in a tie for seventh at +2. However, ODU

then fired a -5 and -2 in the second and third rounds, respectively, to climb four spots and finish third.

All five ODU competitors placed

in the top 40 of the 100-player field, as Katerina Vlasinova and Sana Tufail both finished in the top 20. Vlasinova (-2) recorded a top-15 finish for the second consecutive event, tying for 12th, while Tufail (-1) tied for 19th. Rounding out the ODU lineup were Maggie Simmer- macher (+1), who finished 26th, and Charlotte De Corte (+4) and Noemie Sudron (+4), who both tied for 38th.

East Carolina (-17) won the team

title, while Jacksonville State’s Val- entina Giraldo (-8) took home indi- vidual medalist honors.

Vardon Trophy in 2015, posted a 68.846 adjusted scoring average based upon 85 complete rounds. Rickie Fowler was runner-up at 69.083; Tomas
