CNU Men’s Golf Wins Third Straight Bay Creek Invitational

CAPE CHARLES, Va. -- After carding a tournament-best round of 297 on Tuesday morning, the 23rd- ranked Christopher Newport men’s golf team held off a charge by the University of Mary Washington to secure the team’s third straight title at the Bay Creek Invitational. In the third annual event, CNU (+26) beat out the Eagles (+28) by two strokes, powered by three individual finishes among the top six on the leaderboard.
David Rabil (E) signed for his second straight Even par effort on the Par-72 Nicklaus Course at the Bay
Creek Resort in Cape Charles, Va. Rabil finished just one stroke behind the individual medalist, Sebastian Bonte (-1) from Mary Washington. A tight grouping at the top of the leaderboard saw York College’s Tyler Newton finish third, just one stroke behind Rabil with a one-over 145.
Next up for CNU was junior Joey Corlett (+6), who carded a two-day total of 150 (77-73) after picking up four strokes on his first round score. Corlett captured a fourth place finish on a course he has dominated in the past. In 12 career rounds played at
Bay Creek, Corlett has averaged a score of 76.25 while capturing four top five finishes in five total events.
Sophomore Davis Topping (+8) finished alone in sixth place with a 36-hole score of 152 (75-77). Rounding out the Captains scoring on Tuesday was rookie Kevin Quinto, who posted a three-over 75 in just his second career round of collegiate golf. Quinto wrapped the event in 15th place with a 13-over 157 (82-75. Finally, Kurt Funkhouser was tied for 16th with a 15-over 159 (81-78).
CNU also had three individuals
enter the event as Chris Brugge (+12) tied for 11th, William Snyder (+15) tied for 16th, and Teddy Hoffmann (+16) finished in 21st place.
The two-stroke win for the team was
the closest margin of victory for CNU in five all-time wins at the Bay Creek Resort. The Captains have won three straight Bay Creek Invitationals, and a pair of Capital Athletic Conference Championships, on the course in Cape Charles. The conference tournament preview event saw York (Pa.) finish third, at +40, followed by Goucher (+62), Penn State Harrisburg (+87), and Southern Virginia (+130).
