Hugh English
1 Hello, my name is Hugh English, a longtime resident of Medicine Hat and area. I am
the father of three adult children, an extremely proud grandpa of four, soon to be six, grandchildren. My partner Bonnie and I live in Crescent Heights. I have enjoyed a rather lengthy career both in private business and in the public and not for profit sectors. I hope to bring this varied experience to the next Medicine Hat city council. My community involvement includes Kinsmen, in-school mentoring, singing with the Tartones, musical theatre, playing sports (hockey, senior slowpitch) and serving on various committees and boards.

Our region has been blessed with an abundance of non-renewable natural resources and the responsible development of these resources provides jobs and economic growth to our city. At the same time, we must continue to look to diversify our energy sources, and renewable energy has an important role to play in powering our future growth. However, this will require investing in the right technologies to make that a reality.

With the recent economic downturn in Alberta, many of us have had to tighten our belts. Our City has also experienced a significant reduction in revenues, as a result of declining energy returns. Efficiencies and alternatives must be found to help offset these challenges. As a councillor, I will work to ensure that these do not come at the expense of core public service delivery. We must ensure that the city is providing value to the taxpayers who choose to live and do business here in Medicine Hat.

Living within our means and retaining our quality of life here in Medicine Hat are very important to me. Attracting new business and retaining existing business must be a top priority for our next council. Medicine Hat is an attractive place in which to live, work, raise a family, and retire. City hall must work with businesses to put policies in place that both encourage growth and showcase all that our region has to offer.

As a city, we must ensure collaboration with local governments on areas of mutual interest to avoid duplication at the taxpayer’s expense. Fairness, equity and value for shared services will enhance such a partnership and benefit taxpayers. At the same time, we cannot enter into a framework that is designed to slow the decision-making process at the expense of growth and development. Engaging the public earlier on joint projects is one way to help expedite this process.

You are invited to a dinner party and you don’t know anyone in the room. How would you introduce yourself?
What is your commitment to renewable energy?
How would you like to see City Hall balance spending restraint and public service delivery for residents?
What do you see as the key priority for the City over the next four years?
COUNCILLOR CANDIDATE QUESTIONS
In the next two years, the City will update its development plan and negotiate agreements with Redcliff and Cypress County. What, in your opinion, needs to be included?
