2017 ELECTION PREVIEW 2

Myles Mulholland

1

It’s always good to start with the basics. Hello, I'm Myles Mulholland and I’m a candidate for City Council this election. A little about myself, I’m 34, happily married to my amazing wife Richelle and I’m a proud father of two great kids Tyler and Kaitlyn.

I’m a Veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, a fiscal Conservative and a firm believer in public service and taking pride in your country. I am a very proud new Canadian and I love the people and City of Medicine Hat, the place I’ve been blessed enough to call home.

I’ve worked in the Oil and Gas sector since leaving the army and I have experienced the trials and troubles that have affected many families over the past few years. I’m running for Council because I believe this City needs to return to operating for its citizens and encouraging growth.

TURNBULL Phil RNBULL

“I will stay informed - I will educate myself - I will work with and spur the other Councillors on to strengthen our City and our services - I will strive to put Medicine Hat back on track, and back in the black.”

Business is my background. I came to Medicine Hat in 1980. I simultaneously operated 3 Canadian Tire stores with 2 gas bars also handling land development activities. I was fully accountable for the success and failure of the businesses. We employed hundreds of people whose futures relied upon our success. I generated and studied weekly management reports to closely monitor the business to assure success. I will apply the same expertise In the business of the City.

Economic Development - I want our City to be Open for Business - In conjunction with our current Economic Development efforts, I will engage the great business leaders that are already here - they are Ambassadors- In-waiting that will pave the way for new businesses.

Accountable - Council must be more accountable and vigilant about fi scal matters. We must ask the tough questions so that our City doesn't fall further into fi nancial stress or increased risk. I believe In measurement. How are we REALLY doing? Do we need to adjust? I don't know what the future holds - where oil and gas prices will go, how NAFTA negotiations will affect us. I don't know what weather patterns or fl oods may come Therefore, we must proactively reexamine our position and our goals, adjusting to an ever-changing world. We must continually scrutinize whether each program and service is performing property, and is in fact still useful. It Is a sacred duty of our elected leaders to get our City back on track. I am not afraid of being held accountable. We Can Do Better for our City and our Citizens and I will work hard to ensure we do better...

Available - I am recently retired and am willing and able to serve. I pledge to attend as many Committee Meetings as possible, not just the Committees to which I am Appointed. I will be aware of all issues and able to identify and assess successes and pitfalls. As proven in 4 decades of civic and volunteer service (most recently Alberta Special Winter Olympics & the Santa Claus Fund), I will always be here for Hatters. If you have an issue, please contact me - I am dedicated to strong communication.

Committed - As a long time citizen, business person and former City Councillor, I am committed to our beloved Medicine Hat. I have the business acumen and energy to serve our City, as my history will show. I will always ask the hard question, and will not rest until we get the answers we need. That won't change. I always read City Management reports to ensure we are staying on track. When I see early warnings, alarm bells or red fl ags, I ask the questions - Are we providing the best service? We must always think ahead, working towards a better, stronger future. We need to shore up our fi nances to secure a strong future for the coming generations.

I am a fan of Hydroelectric energy, it’s efficient and reliable. The downside, of course, is it’s highly dependent in geography and has an expensive initial build cost (Dam construction/tidal generators etc.)

Wind power I feel is not as useful. The cost in creating, maintaining and servicing the windmills oſten negates the net gains, not to mention the environmental eyesore it produces.

Solar is the up and coming provider and has great potential but the technology for capture and storage is not currently at an efficiency level which would lead to wholesale replacement of fossil fuel power. The developments over the next 30 years or so will interesting to watch.

No matter how we proceed we must always remember the human and economic costs in how we adapt to utilizing future sources of power.

We need to be fiscally responsible. It’s oſten convenient to use the phrase “public funds” or “City Purse” when referring to expenditure; the correct phrase is taxpayers’ dollars. This is the money that we all entrust to be used for our benefit, so when we hear of the City losing millions of dollars on investments such as the Manyberries oil exploration it’s distressing to say the least.

The City is not a venture capital company. It should concentrate on setting the conditions for private sector growth to enable expansion of our tax base so that we can provide the first-class services this City deserves.

This will not happen overnight. Until we can start refocusing we will have to seek efficiencies in a responsible manner. The City cannot operate in a deficit and we cannot deplete our reserves without careful consideration.

Growth, growth, growth, we must be ambitious and energetic in advertising the potential of this City. We need to move away from traditional avenues of pursuit and embrace the emerging markets.

Our plans and strategies are not short term, Myself and Michael Klassen believe we will need 4-6 years, maybe more, to rebuild what has taken place since the last election. The financial structure of the city may remain similar going into 2019 and 2020 while we develop the groundwork on which to build new business opportunities. The business and industry potential of this city has stagnated and the people’s net worth has decreased. We intend to reverse that with a fiscally conservative plan that builds a business-friendly environment which attracts manufacturing, distribution, and new technologies to enrich the lives of the citizens of Medicine Hat. We aim to grow the City, not taxes.

We need to review transport options including, but not limited to, introducing a transport link between our major communities, aggressively pursuing a low-cost carrier for our airport and enacting the requirements the carrier would need to enable this, and jointly working together to discuss with the province a twinning of highway 3.

We should also maintain close emergency services ties so that if the fires that have plagued B.C. this summer should fall upon our area in the future, we can combat them with maximum efficiency.

I would also like to see our current water protection plans strengthened as well, preserving this important resource for future generations.
