S
ay hello to the Institute of Student Employers (ISE) and The Student Employer magazine. Since AGR was established nearly 50 years ago (1968), its remit widened in response to the evolution of the graduate recruitment market and the corresponding shift in employer needs.
ISE reflects the current market; the traditional graduate scheme is now just one of several programmes that employers use to recruit, develop, and retain the best talent. Recent policy changes have meant that apprenticeships have risen up the agenda for our education providers too, and our suppliers are responding with new technology and innovations. Employers are also increasingly engaging schools and colleges (as well as universities) as part of their entry-level recruitment strategies.
ISE’s magazine has also been improved to become more of what our members need. Instead of focusing on one core theme per issue, we will now cover multiple topics in each issue, keeping our members more up to date with the latest thinking.
In this first issue, you will find articles on aspects of diversity, apprenticeships & school leavers, attraction & marketing, selection & assessment and universities.
Each article looks at a different issue within these areas, providing more content and a full and in-depth resource for our members.
The nature of the articles is not the only thing we have changed with our new magazine – you will find a whole host of different sections. Samuel Gordon, ISE’s Research Analyst, has expanded his column to include more evidence from the latest survey. In every issue we will have a spotlight on a different sector, with the finance sector being the first up. Over time, this should help build a greater understanding of what’s current for these organisations.
ISE are heavily involved in training and helping members develop their skills, so we have created the Easy Expert section, in which you will find tips, cheat sheets and a full schedule for our upcoming courses and webinars.
At the end of the magazine, please join us By the Watercooler, where we take a more informal look at the industry and what people are up to. We ask an employer and university for their perspectives on an issue that affects them both. Find out what a certain CEO does in his spare time, what is happening in South Africa (a new country in each issue) and what a telephone
interviewer is really thinking. Let us not forget an old favourite though…Dr Paul Redmond remains with the magazine to give his views on Life as We Know it.
We hope you enjoy this inaugural issue and find it an even more valuable source of insight and information. If you have any ideas for future features, I’d love to hear them!
