Working together to level the playing field
a platform to engage pupils in their ASPIRE Work Experience and BrightStart Apprenticeships. Pupils are mentored by local Deloitte professionals during organised workshops where they learn about entrepreneurial mind-sets, persuasive communication and leadership.
Social mobility remains a serious social issue, with one in five British children still living in absolute poverty. The reality is, poorer children are four times more likely to become poor adults; following in their parents’ footsteps. Morven Cameron, Project Development Executive at WildHearts Group, shows how their work with Deloitte helped students step out of this cycle.
Inadequacy of equal opportunities and limited inherited prospects is a chronic issue faced by this generation. For things to change, more than just government intervention is required. Consequently, to ensure a stream of future talent and diversity of workforces, employers themselves are intervening.
One of the companies pioneering this strategy is Deloitte. In partnership with WildHearts they are committed to finding solutions to address social mobility across the UK. Over the past two years, Deloitte have worked with WildHearts to lead the change on recruitment, development and diversification of talent via the award-winning entrepreneurial education programme, Micro-Tyco. To date WildHearts have placed over 400 school pupils from low-income communities into Deloitte’s ASPIRE Work Experience;
improving career opportunities for pupils and increasing diversity in talent pools. The Micro-Tyco Schools programme has been at the forefront of Deloitte’s strategy and is continuing to grow with the next cohort of schools participating this November. WildHearts extensive experience in the education sector and their robust schools’ network has enabled Deloitte to address social mobility issues whilst developing a sustainable talent pipeline. WildHearts ensure the most in-need schools are selected using social mobility criteria set out by Access Accountancy’s standards. Pupils must either: be eligible for free school meals, attend a school with above regional average of free school meals or be the first in their family to attend university.
This partnership is designed to bring to life a career at Deloitte, providing
Pupils then apply these learnings to the one-month Micro-Tyco challenge, generating as much money as possible from their one pound seed capital. All the money is then invested by WildHearts into micro-loans for poor entrepreneurs in the developing world, teaching pupils entrepreneurial skills with compassion and ethics at their core. The 200 best performing pupils can then transform their career prospects with the opportunity to secure a place on Deloitte’s ASPIRE Work Experience. Upon completion, they then have the chance to apply for Deloitte’s BrightStart Apprenticeship programme - a Higher Accountancy Apprenticeship - enabling them to earn whilst gaining a professional qualification.
In partnership with WildHearts, Deloitte have established an innovative way to attract, identify and develop young people using entrepreneurial education. They are levelling the playing field for pupils who often deselect themselves from corporate roles and are frequently under-represented in this environment. In doing so they have identified two key benefits: internally, bringing a diverse approach to corporate challenges and socially, offering life- changing career opportunities.
Deloitte have successfully demonstrated the significant business benefits that come from addressing social mobility and in doing so provided a compelling case for fellow corporates to emulate.
