Sweden’s BillerudKorsnäs rises in the sustainability rankings
Cream cup that’s plastic-reinforced paper
A new design of paper cup launched in Sweden by Arla uses mainly recycled materials and is said to cut climate impact by half compared to previous designs. Arla Köket Crème Fraiche uses plastic-reinforced paper for the 2dl format and replaces a cup that uses aluminium foil. Anna Karin Modin Edman, Sustainability Manager at Arla,
said: “Our goal is to make all our packaging recyclable while we also want to reduce our impact on the environment. Therefore, we are very proud of our new Crème Fraiche paper cup, where we have increased the proportion of renewable materials and removed all aluminum, which reduces climate impact by more than 50 per cent.”
BillerudKorsnäs has advanced its position as the leading European company in the Containers & Packaging category of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. Last year, it was in the top 20 per cent of companies on the category in Europe, and this year it is now in the top 10 per cent.
BillerudKorsnäs is now included in the World Index. This, it says, is particularly due to its performance within risk and crisis management, climate strategy and labour practice indicators. Commenting on the new ranking, Per Lindberg, chief
executive of BillerudKorsnäs, said: “Being included among the most sustainable companies in the world is a great honour to us. Contributing to sustainable development is and will continue to be the starting point for our long-term strategy of profitable growth. “Sustainability is therefore
an integral part of everything we do. In a broader context, that means to always strive to make sustainability work a little further, to challenge conventional packaging solutions and working methods, and thereby positively contribute to a globally sustainable future.”
