Eliminate the need to manually pick paper samples for dryness tests


A


n online measuring system for paper dryness that is said to


completely eliminate the need to manually pick paper samples for laboratory analysis has been developed by Cristini Diagnostic Systems. Using a proprietary microwave technology, SmartScan overcomes


the typical limits of the NIR (Near Infrared) sensors. Installed after the press section, with a precision of 0.003 per cent, SmartScan is said to represent a major safety innovation and a step forward towards the Industry 4.0 concept, as well as an integration with all existing Cristini sensor systems.

Colour management systems on show in Chicago


The latest colour-management systems were showcased by X-Rite and its subsidiary Pantone LLC at Print17 in Chicago in August. A range of closed-loop colour


control systems aimed at commercial printer and packaging converters were displayed on the Rutherford Graphic Products booth. X-Rite says that printers and


converters face the complexity of managing shorter print runs, faster turnaround times and demanding


customer requirements. Printers must match colour standards


against the files and proofs provided by customers for


digital and offset production environments on a variety of substrates. Production standards then need to be maintained, communicated and used effectively at every point in the colour workflow to ensure optimum productivity and consistently high- quality colour. “The combined closed loop


colour control solution from Rutherford Graphic Products and X-Rite can help streamline print operations by reducing make-ready times, minimising ink and substrate waste and automatically checking output for colour drifts,” says Cindy Cooperman, global director of packaging and brand at X-Rite.


Early detection of Yankee deformations can help extend life


A system that identifies deformations in the surface of a Yankee cylinder and can improve tissue line productivity and quality has been developed by Voith.


Although wear such as this is


inevitable, with OTR Precise Voith is offering tissue manufacturers a technology for reliably identifying these problem areas, providing

early detection and correction of surface defects that can extend the service life of the Yankee cylinder. Voith installs the OTR Precise


system during a scheduled machine shutdown and afterwards the measurements are conducted during normal operation of the Yankee. With the help of a precise tension


measurement and 3D measuring process the system eliminates the influences of vibration, to produce a topographical map of the Yankee cylinder surface, whose precision is setting a new benchmark for the industry. By comparing the target


state of the crown profile with its actual state, normal and abnormal deformations


such as areas of wear can be interpreted. This data forms the basis for precise planning of maintenance cycles. Initiating countermeasures in this way extends the life of the cylinder. In addition, the analysis enables an optimum CD moisture profile to be produced and as a result, tissue quality is improved and machine efficiency increased.
