Church News News from St Hubert’s and St Nicholas’...

Some of you will no doubt have seen or heard fi re engines arrive at St Nicholas church on a Sunday morning at the beginning of September. In between our two services it was noticed a small fi re had broken out in the ceiling of the church. The fi re resistant material used in the roofi ng meant the fi re was contained and soon extinguished and the swift actions of members of the congregation and the fi re service meant the building was made safe and soon available for use again. Disaster was averted. I write this however with a very real awareness that disaster is not always averted, for example as we have seen recently in the Grenfell Tower disaster and the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma.

The Bible has much to say about when things go wrong in life. It does not shirk the issue by pretending life is smooth and uneventful, but rather describes the opposite. We read in both the book of Job and Psalms, people’s reaction to things going badly wrong, often one of anger, frustration and bewilderment. The Bible also resists offering trite answers to why these things happen but we are given the reassurance that God cares and is with us, whatever we are going through, in all the ups and downs of life.

Perhaps one of the most diffi cult times we go through in life is when we lose a loved one. We all grieve and cope with loss in different ways but if it would help you to join with others who have also been bereaved then we would like to invite you to come and remember your loved one, however long ago they died, at a short service on Sunday 29th of October at 4pm. The service will be followed by tea and cake. I look forward to welcoming you to the service or indeed to any of our services.
