Q. Why does dry skin increase with age? What can be done about it?

A. Skin changes due to aging and it can lead to dry skin, or what we also commonly see is thin skin that leads to skin tears. Aging can also cause skin itching and inflammation, and that is usually due to a loss of the fat layer in the skin and collagen. The top layer of skin dries out more easily and holds moisture poorly. Loss of collagen and fat cause it to get real thin. The main things people can do is help thicken the skin with an inexpen- sive lotion. We recommend people don’t spend $100 a bottle for lotion, they just need Vaseline Intensive Care or something along those lines, that will hold moisture in.

They should also wear protective clothing, long sleeve T-shirts. That

gives you a second layer over the skin and helps protect from bumping furni- ture, doorways, handles. We see people get skin tears from normal activities in their home like bumping a table. If they have protective clothing on, it

helps prevent those tears. I suggest wearing denim shirts, those are thick. It is also important to stay hydrated. That will help with dry skin and may help prevent falls that lead to skin tears or other problems.
