The building that houses Nature’s Way Cafe is the oldest on the square in downtown Mountain Home.

2014, but it took more than a year to renovate and restore the space. When they bought the

building, it had to be gutted. The upstairs — which is now available to rent for parties, weddings and private events —had not been used in more than 50 years. There were wires hanging down, holes in the wall, broken windows, and gaps so large that birds would just fly in, said Dun- can as he held his smart phone in his hand and flipped through photos of the origi- nal space. It was in shambles. “It needed some love,”

said Jack. “We have been able to travel some and want- ed to do something a little different. It is a natural ex- pansion of what we do in the grocery because we have local, non-GMO, natural, grass-fed foods to feature

there. It gave us an extension of the business and then we wanted to open up all three buildings for people to pass through.” Today, the upstairs has

been transformed into a beautiful space with antique light fixtures, candles and tables draped in white linens. There’s a cozy fireplace in the corner, wood accents throughout, and a small, private dining space. While it is available for

rent, they also host special dinners (like on Valentine’s Day) where they feature a fixed price, multi-course, gourmet, healthy meal. Dun- can said they plan to expand on those dinner offerings, where people can bring their own wine to pair with the upscale dinner. Dimick has attended one of the special dinners and says it was spec- tacular.

To meet fire codes, they

had to build a second stair- case, so the staircase leading from the restaurant down- stairs to the upstairs was built by a local craftsman. It is juxtaposed to the original wall, which has some holes in it — it’s another nod to the modern and historic charac- ter of the business. They strived to keep the

old-fashioned charm but give it a kiss of modern style.

The Food The café serves breakfast

and lunch, Tuesday through Saturday. You may not expect it

from a healthy restaurant, but the burgers are one of the best sellers. “People tell me all the

time, ‘That’s the best burger I’ve ever had,’ and honestly, we don’t do much to them,”
