Looking at the impact of Brexit more broadly, the big question is whether we will adopt European environmen- tal policy, such as the Circular Economy Package, for the future. My view is that the EU will make it a condition of any trade deal that we do comply with EU environmental standards. However, I also think it is likely that the UK government will take a light touch approach to enforcing this.


T e direction the UK takes in this respect could potentially aff ect the RDF market. At the moment the UK’s defi nition of RDF is very loose and it means diff erent things to diff erent people. Powerday, for instance, pro- duces very high-quality RDF and SRF (Solid Recovered Fuel) aſt er taking out materials for recycling whereas some people just shred rubbish. T ere could be European regulators aff ecting the quality of material. I think it would be good if we got clarity around the application of the waste hierarchy.


T e Brexit negotiations will go on for a long time and they are already talking about a transition period aſt er that. It is going to be uncertain for a while. T at is why if companies can produce diff erent grades of high quality RDF that will put them in a stronger position. T e important thing for waste businesses is making sure they are fl exible to deal with any outcome.
