$105,000 Added to Halter Classes New this year, halter ex-

hibitors at the 2017 Lucas Oil AQHA World Championship Show will have the opportunity to com- pete for $105,000 in additional prize money. Exhibitors will com- pete for added money in various halter classes, thanks to the gen- erosity of 10-year cumulative breeders Steve and Kathy Headley of Bloomington, Indiana, who do- nated $25,000; 30-year cumulative breeders Gary and Linda Gordon of Fossil Gate Farms, Roanoke, Texas, who donated $50,000; and 30-year cumulative breeder Terry Brad- shaw, and his wife, Tammy, who donated $30,000. The Association along with

the Headleys, Gordons and Brad- shaws will determine how the added money will be disseminated and the classes to which it will be awarded. Those details will be an- nounced before the Lucas Oil World entry deadline, September 15, on www.aqha.com/worldshow. For more information on

turns to the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo and celebrates the event’s 10-year anniversary. The exhibit in- cludes a list of more than 40 world- renowned Western artists providing pieces for the 10th annual art show and sale. Mark your calendar now for the show’s opening on August 12 or plan a trip to view this year’s exhibit before it closes October 14. Over the past 10 years, top Western artists have been invited to partici- pate in the show to present new paintings, drawings and sculptures in the Scharbauer Gallery. This year, they continue the tradition and celebrate 10 years of exhibition. The signature piece for the

2017 show is a piece by artist Joni Monroe Beinborn of La Crosse, Wisconsin. The piece is titled “Any Time … Any Place.” Beinborn, along with many of the contributing artists, will be at the opening, which is 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Au- gust 12 at the Museum. The event will feature live music, hors d’oeu- vres and cocktails. Each piece of art – ranging from pencil drawings to sculptures – will be avail- able for purchase on open- ing night. All remaining pieces

not sold on opening night will be offered on a first- come, first-served basis, be- ginning at 8 a.m. CDT on August 14. Art sales will be available online, by tele- phone at 806-376-5181 and by

artshow@aqha.org. The purchased artwork will re- main on exhibit until the show closes in October. Proceeds from the sale of the art go to the museum to support its efforts to pre- serve the history of the

American Quarter Horse.

Investigation of Medication Ban While the American Quarter

Horse Association recognizes the therapeutic benefits of the drug furosemide, commonly known as Lasix, to help mitigate the occur- rence of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) in racehorses, the AQHA Executive Committee re- cently asked the AQHA Animal Wel- fare Commission to review the proposed prohibition of Lasix for show horses, set to be effective as of January 1, 2018. Balancing the use of therapeutic medication for the wel- fare of the horse in different types of competition, such as racing and showing, while minimizing or elim- inating performance-enhancing prop- erties of medication compounds has been a challenge in the equine indus- try.

Lasix has been endorsed by

several equine groups and the Amer- ican Association of Equine Practi- tioners to lessen the occurrence of EIPH in racehorses. Consistent with

such groups, AQHA opposed the lat- est version of the newly introduced Horseracing Integrity Act of 2017, which would eliminate all race-day medications, including Lasix in race- horses. The Association and Executive

Committee are committed to the wel- fare of the horse and look forward to receiving additional input from the AQHA Animal Welfare Commission regarding the proposed prohibition of Lasix across all disciplines of show horses, including whether disciplines that may have a higher incidence of EIPH warrant different Lasix poli- cies.

In the interim, the current rule

change will be held for review, and the final decision of the Executive Committee regarding Lasix usage in show horses will be announced on AQHA.com after the investigation is concluded.
