‘Heart by Monte Baker. I talked to a friend just the other day who’s got lots of opinions
and plenty to say. We discussed what we both like to see in a horse. His requirements and mine were different of course... He likes a clean throatlatch and a long skinny neck, and prefers that their hocks are set close to the deck. Short backs and hard feet and clean slopin’ shoulder, and a gaskin that looks like it swallered a boulder. He likes a short face and a big ol’soft eye, and says these are the horses he’s ‘s likely to buy. And when he’d completed his lengthy discourse, on all of the attributes of the quality horse. He asked my opinion, and where do I start? And I said that I...just want horses with heart. I said I want heart above all the other. I don’t care if he’s Smart Little Lena’s full brother. Or just how much money that his grandmother won, or whether he’s roan, palomino or dun. But give me a horse with some grit and some try, and some heart and some guts and that’s the one that I’ll buy. And I’ve found it’s the same with a woman or
man...the good ones won’t quit you when the shit hits the fan. Ron Velmesshousen

‘One day’ or ‘Day one’...You decide This summer is moving way too fast. The
Vivian Forest July 21 – 23 ride and camp came and went “without” rain.. Yippee! We enjoyed three days of excellent trails, fellowship and food. I can honestly say that I did my first “bush whacking” on this trip. Challenging for both

horses and riders but also a little exhilarat- ing. I was relieved when told that we did not have to go back out the way that we came in. Haha! On Saturday night after one of our renowned potluck dinners and after the horses were tucked in for the night we joined Helmut at the house for a game of Pictionary (kids version). Sounds crazy, but it was a hoot! Two raccoon peeked in the patio doors at us probably to see why we were making so much noise. I awoke to find two empty yogurt containers on my outdoor carpet. Linda had her garbage bro- ken into Friday night. I discovered that the empty containers were mine. The raccoon unlocked the latch, opened my cooler and help themselves to the yo- gurt. Helmut told me not to feel bad. They took the bait from his live trap and were gone. They are ingenious. We were thrilled Sunday af- ternoon when Dolly Puccia and group paid us a visit. The Puccias are always so much fun and have so much energy. A small contingent of OTRA riders were in Otter Creek, Ny week of June 28 – July 9th. Otter
Creek is on everyone’s bucket list. The Wiarton 7 day ride July 30 – August 5th is happening now. This ride is extremely popular. I will send a review next newslet- ter.
August and September are the busiest
months on the OTRA calendar. Lots going on with OTRA and other rides as well. Dutton-Dunwich Great Trail Event, August 26 – 27th. Rockwood Trail Riders, Trail Horse Trials, 50th Anniversary, Sunday, Sept. 10th. See you on the trails.
