Phantom Equine Watch Celebrates 1st Anniversary

By Kelly Bowers Paul Hannam has cared for and watched over his

horses for 20 years and the one downfall has been that the responsibility continued day and night for 365 days of the year. That meant that he and his partner were never able to get away together as someone always needed to be home. Then in the spring of 2016 after moving to Water- ford, ON, Paul was remembering those travel-free days and it dawned on him that others in the same situation now would be experiencing the same problem. That sounded a bit like a business opportunity to Paul. Expanding on that thought, he considered that farms that hold shows might need someone to watch the barn full of visiting show horses overnight too - and that was it. Over a couple months, his idea grew and transformed into a plan. One year ago, on August 8th, Paul registered the

name Phantom Equine Watch and had business cards made. And he called The Rider to help promote his busi- ness, something he always knew he would do if starting an equine business. Shortly after, Paul was on his way home from the feed store when he stopped at the Ancaster Fairgrounds to drop off one of his new business cards to them. The fates smiled upon him though when he walked in on an Ontario Quarter horse show running at the fair- grounds that very day. He gave his card to the OQHA show organizers and they talked about the services he could provide. They booked him on the spot to provide over night watch for 5 nights at their upcoming shows, and he was off and running. Right time, right place, right serv- ice. Phantom Equine Watch happily sponsored the 2016 Ontario Quarter Horse Breeders Futurity and Paul has agreed to do it again this year. Besides watching over quarter horses, Phantom Equine Watch was also the offi- cial night watch for horses at the Can-Am Equine Expo in Markham and The Mane Event in London this year. They continue to advertise in the Rider and will be running an ad in the next OQHA magazine as well. As a horse breeder for two decades, Paul has knowl-

edge about the behaviour of horses and has developed a bit of a sixth sense about them. He believes he can provide more personal care for horses than automated systems available these days. In his first year, he has already han- dled unexpected incidents such as a door being kicked open by a horse and another time, a young horse was lay- ing down on it’s side looking distressed with laboured breathing for more than two hours before he contacted the owners. He has checked out unauthorized people wander-

ing through the barn late at night and reminded others of the “No Smoking” policy. After all, safety comes first. Stalls and doors and locks are checked and every animal is cared for as if it is his own. Then, in the morning, he supplies the client with a written report summarizing the night’s activities. Paul is booked with the OQHA for an- other 27 nights this year but he looks forward to speaking with more farm owners and clubs or show circuits of var- ious breeds and disciplines about doing the same for their animals. Because, don’t we all deserve to get away or just rest with peace of mind while someone watches over. Phantom Equine currently serves mostly Southern Ontario and looks forward to expanding further across the province.
