This period provides the best opportunity for mills to carry out the annual maintenance and service of production lines. Increasingly though this will be performed by external specialists, the most advanced of whom will have installed remote monitoring systems that keep a check on day-to-day performance, enabling diagnostic analysis and remedial work without even having visited the mill.
These services complement and greatly enhance the skills of the service operators, largely because they are able to see into the equipment and predict precisely when attention is necessary, rather than during planned maintenance schedules.
Nevertheless, there will always be heavy work to be
carried out in key areas where the focus is on replacement or upgrades. Now is the best time for that.
