EdgeExpert saves 4% virgin fibres T


he use of EdgeExpert makes it possible for paper manufacturers to precisely adjust the


web edge of paper layers right from the headbox. This concept


developed by Voith guides the high-quality virgin fibres right back into the material cycle. EdgeExpert can be used for both single- as well as multi-layer machines.


Without EdgeExpert, the entire


web edge of the high-quality pulp layer is removed after the couching step, and then it is no longer possible for the pulp to be reused in the best quality layer.


Paper manufacturers can save


raw materials worth more than €100,000 per year by adjusting the web edge with EdgeExpert and the return directly after the headbox, says Voith Olivier Adt, production manager


at Smurfit Kappa, has been using EdgeExpert on the PM5 machine at its Biganos mill in France: “We have been using the new system for several weeks now and have already been able to save 4 per cent of white virgin fibres in the top layer. In addition, since the installation, we have benefited from the exact seal with the forming wire, without any pulp projection. There are also no fibre deposits on the system, thanks to the well-designed nozzles, allowing us to keep a very good uptime of the paper machine.” The technology of EdgeExpert


Thermal smoothing offers board product savings of 3.5%


Raw material savings of up to 3.5 percent in board manufacturing plants are said to be possible with the use of the EcoCal Plus calender from Voith. Special thermal smoothing of the


EcoCal Plus calender will ensure that papermakers will produce high-grade board products with high stability and lower basis weight, along with an improved surface structure. The demand for board grades with maximum possible bulk has been growing steadily. With lightweight and stable board

products, significant cost savings can be achieved, for example in the mail-order business. At the same time, board packaging products are increasingly important for advertising of consumer goods by focusing attention on the package contents which indirectly support its sales. Good printability and surface quality are just as important as stability and low weight. Both properties are said to be positively influenced by the EcoCal Plus calender. For the production of lightweight


and stable board product grades, manufacturers usually use high fresh fibre content. Secondary fibres are only added in some cases. Lower basis weights and maintaining or improving board properties are therefore crucial for lowering resource consumption and production costs. The hard nip calender plays a


decisive role in the manufacturing of high-quality, stable board with low basis weight, by smoothing the paper surface and giving the board a uniform surface. EcoCal Plus used for pre-calendering makes


use of the fact that surfaces can be smoothed more easily when moisturised and warm. It features an external induction-heated system that brings the thermo- roll to a temperature of up to 260 deg C, considerably higher than conventional systems. With thermal smoothing, less mechanical force needs to be applied to the paper web. As a result, the bulk loss is much lower than with conventional calendering. Paper smoothed with the EcoCal Plus thus has a higher specific volume.
