Lucart converts used drinks cartons into washroom dispensers

A

process for separating used drinks cartons into cellulose fibres for paper manufacturing and the

remaining plastics and aluminium for building materials and everyday furniture products has been developed by Italian paper products specialist Lucart. The Fiberpack project was launched by Lucart at Pulire, a professional cleaning industry trade show held in Verona at the end of May. Lucart says that it can recycle 100 per cent of the components of a beverage carton, allocating 74 per cent of cellulose fibres to the production of recycled paper

products and the remaining 26 per cent, consisting of 22 per cent polyethylene and 4 per cent aluminium, to the production of AL.PE, a recovered material intended for industries that produce building materials and urban furniture items. Lucart has used AL.PE to create a full range of washroom area dispensers, combining the concept of sustainability with the three key elements that are most in-demand on the market: manageability, design and reliability. The process has been recognised with an award at the second EU Ecolabel National Awards. EU Ecolabel is the ecological quality brand of the European Union for

products and services, which, in addition to guaranteeing high performance standards, are characterised by a low environmental impact throughout the entire life cycle. “We are very proud to receive

this prestigious award, which is also a reward for our determination in pursuing the circular business model. It is no surprise that in 1998 we were the first Italian company to obtain the Ecolabel certification and, therefore, to believe that product sustainability should be achieved by taking into account the entire life cycle of a product,” said Guido Pasquini, Lucart’s commercial director, “We sincerely hope that the

Watermelon packaging saves space

As part of a bid to reduce waste in the watermelon supply chain, Mondi has developed a cartonboard container that enables 50 per cent more to be packed in a truck than with octabins, corrugated or plastic trays or ‘A’ boxes. The Watermelon’s Dream project

uses a folded mono-corrugated cardboard design that is easy to assemble and stack, and used directly on supermarket shelves. It has been launched in Turkey and is available from Mondi worldwide. Fatos Adak, product innovation manager at Mondi Corrugated Packaging Turkey, said: “The

Watermelon’s Dream is an excellent example of Mondi’s capabilities to address market

needs for convenience, differentiation at point of sale and sustainability. Mondi products touch the lives of millions of people every day, we therefore want our products to have a positive impact on society and the communities in which we operate.”

China’s Anhui Shanying to buy Nordic Paper

Sweden’s leading producer of kraft and greaseproof paper, Nordic Paper, is to be bought by China-based pulp and paper maker Anhui Shanying Paper from owners Special Situation Venture Partner and Petek GmbH, which hold 60 per cent and 40 percent share respectively. Anhui Shanying Paper is a part of Taison Group and has been

listed at the Shanghai Stock Exchange since 2001. The terms of the offer were not

revealed but involves Nordic’s three mills in Sweden and one in Norway with total paper making capacity of 245,000 tons per year and pulp capacity of 260,000 tons a year. Anhui Shanying Paper said

that it planned to expand and diversify the operations, both in

terms of product portfolio and geographically. Its core business is in recycled fibre trading, kraft paper manufacturing, packaging, design, printing and logistics. Nordic Paper will remain as an independent European pulp and paper company and for the moment there will be no changes regarding the business or operations at the moment. Nordic Paper’s four

paper making plants are at Bäckhammar and Åmotfors, where it makes unbleached kraft paper with a combined capacity of around 180,000 tpy; and at Säffle and Greåker which produce greaseproof paper with a total capacity of around 65,000 tpy. It also operates two pulp mills in Säffle with capacity of 30,000 tpy and Bäckhammar with 230,000 tpy.
