Paper and board consumption rises again in Europe

Despite increasingly uncertain global markets, production of paper and board in Europe was resilient in 2016, reports the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI), which represents the forest, fibre and paper industries. Consumption of paper and board in Europe increased for the third consecutive year, growing by 0.3 per cent to 77.4 million tonnes in 2016, driven by stronger demand for certain categories of paper products, particularly sustainable packaging, hygiene and speciality papers. The rise in consumption has also had a knock-on effect on imports into CEPI countries which rose by 4.5 per cent in 2016 (7.2 per cent of total European paper consumption). globally the industry remains a net exporter, exporting approximately 21 per cent of its production. On another positive note there

was a 2.7 per cent increase in pulp production, to 37.2 million tonnes, which reversed recent years of decline. This was buoyed by an increase (17.8 per cent) in the export of market pulp to non-CEPI countries, particularly Asia (20.8 per cent increase). Utilisation of paper for recycling

has remained relatively stable, exhibiting a slight increase in 2016. The collection of paper for recycling has also improved, displaying a modest increase of 1.0 per cent. At the same time, exports of paper for recycling have increased by 5.6 per cent, the majority of which was shipped to Asian markets (91.7 per cent).
