A museum, a monument Discover the history of the motor car at the Cité de l’Automobile
maritime adventures of explorer Jean-François de Galaup, Comte de Lapérouse. Lapérouse, his ship and his crew, disappeared after taking on supplies from the British at Sydney, and his fate – unknown at the time – was imagined in Jules Verne’s novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Explore the mystery of his final voyage with navigational instruments and artefacts from the wreck of La Boussole, which was not found until 1964.

Musée d’Archéologie et d’Histoire du Maine Le Mans
In the Carré Plantagenêt division of the museum, around 1,200 objects detail the story of Le Mans as a city. It’s a great way to access local history, but the museum has also recently delved into cultures from much further afield. Courtesy of the Musée du quai Branly Jacques Chirac, the last collection looked at four civilisations from Africa, America, Oceania and Asia. Now, Le Renard Pâle au Pays des
Dogon exhibition (running until September 24) looks at the unique culture and traditions of the Dogon people of Mali in western Africa.

Musée Départemental Arles Antique Arles
This archaeological museum houses a bounty of remarkable antiquities unearthed locally, including a number of Roman mosaics and a 31metre Roman river boat. If you come here before 21 January 2018, you can also see the Luxe dans l’Antiquité exhibition, a display of 128 high-value items from ancient times.
