THE GUIDE MUSEUMS 2017

Mémorial National de la prison de Montluc

Implements of engravery at the Maison de l’Outil et de la Pensée Ouvrière

work of several of his contemporaries, with all items having been lovingly created in minute detail. Also within this museum lie some famous props from modern cinema, such as the terrifying Queen from the Alien franchise and the eponymous killer doll from Chucky. museeminiatureetcinema.fr

Military Prison used by the Vichy Regime between 1940 and 1943, Montluc was eventually requisitioned by the Nazis during the occupation from January 1943. It was home to as many as 10,000 inmates including the children of Izieu, Jean Moulin and Marc Bloch, and Lyon’s National Prison went on to become the gateway to the concentration camps to the east. Still in operation after the war, Montluc eventually closes its doors for the final time in 2009, and opens to the public in its current form as a National Memorial in 2010.

Musée International des Arts Modestes Sète, near Montpellier This museum’s humble title refers to the slightly unusual nature of its contents, for it’s not paintings or sculptures that lie within but a refreshingly bizarre combination of discarded items, from plastic toys to old posters and various other knick-knacks and bric-a-brac. Provoking a sense of nostalgia and whimsy, it’s certainly a new way to look at everyday objects. www.miam.org

INDUSTRY

Maison de l’Outil et de la Pensée Ouvrière Troyes Troyes, with its medieval streets and half-timbered houses, is a city steeped in history, so it’s only fi tting that it should be

home to a retrospective museum such as this. La Maison de l’Outil et de la Pensée Ouvrière takes us on a journey through the evolution of craft instruments, giving recognition to tools of the trade of artisans through the ages. Far from being mundane, it’s an eye-opening exhibition which isn’t afraid to explore the artistic side of something so practical – and where else would you be able to see 330 trowels suspended like birds in fl ight? mopo3.com

Musée de la Savonnerie, Marius Fabre Marseille

Soap might not spring to mind when you picture the booming port city of Marseille, but in fact the area produces some incredibly popular savon products. Marseille’s hard soaps have been in production since Marius Fabre set up his company in 1900 and the original factory is still in use today, four generations down the line. Take a free guided tour, and pay a visit to the attached museum – set up in an old drying room, no less – to see examples of original packaging and early moulds. www.marius-fabre.com FT
