MUSEUMS 2017 THE GUIDE

ABBAYE D’ARTHOUS

ARTHOUS ABBAYE D’

Hastingues – Landes France

The Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent reopens to the public on October 3

of outdoor displays, but many of them are still fully functional. The 800-plus collection is formed primarily from WWII tanks, plus some of the most pioneering models from around the globe. www.museedesblindes.fr

Musée Franco-Australien Villers-Bretonneux, Somme Australian forces played a vital role in the Great War. To commemorate their efforts, and the friendship between French and Australian troops, the Franco-Australian Museum in Villers-Bretonneux displays photos, letters and personal belongings from the time, bringing today’s generation closer to those who risked and lost their lives. The museum has just been renovated, too, so now is the perfect time to visit! www.museeaustralien.com

Historial de la Grande Guerre Péronne, Somme

Comparative history from the First World War is examined at the Historial de la Grande Guerre, looking at the

experiences of combatants from France, Great Britain and Germany. Péronne’s medieval castle – itself damaged during WWI – marks the site entrance, although the permanent exhibition is tucked away back in

the modern wing. Weapons, military equipment and uniforms are all on display, as well as sprawled mannequins representing the suffering shared by both sides. It all makes for a sobering outing. www.historial.org

Juno Beach Centre Courseulles-sur-Mer, Calvados The Juno Beach Centre in Normandy is devoted to the Canadian soldiers who fought in WWII and, more pertinently, to those 45,000 who lost their lives. As well as presenting facts about the war, the museum more intimately touches upon the real lives of the soldiers through photos, videos, fi rst-hand accounts and stories passed down to their children. A poignant reminder of the tragedy of war, the museum continues to serve as a memorial to the fallen, whilst also seeking to educate today’s generation about one of the most crucial events in modern history. www.junobeach.org
