News Bedding thief
A MAIDSTONE man who stole bedding from a store in the town has been jailed. Stuart John Payne, 53, admitted
two counts of shoplifting and two counts of failing to surrender to court bail when he appeared at Mid Kent Magistrates’ Court on July 10. Magistrates heard he stole three
duvet sets, worth £45, from a shop in St Peter’s Street, Maidstone, on October 7 and, on May 16, meat worth £39 from a supermarket in Romney Place, Maidstone. The 53-year-old, from Dickens
Road, failed to surrender to bail at Mid Kent Magistrates’ Court with- out reasonable excuse on June 15 and 23. Magistrates sentenced Payne to 56 days in prison.

The legal limit is 35. Brook, from Gayhurst Drive, Sittingbourne, admitted the charge and was banned from driv- ing for 22 months.

Allotment dream bears fruit - and some veg, too
A SHEPWAY mum’s dream of transforming overgrown council allotments into a community gar- den has begun to bear fruit – and veg.
Nikki Gough, of Lincoln Road, recruited a “land army” of friends, neighbours and volunteers to refur- bish the half-acre plot off Hamp- shire Drive, Shepway. The group, pictured, known as
the Shepway Chariots, gained fund- ing and support from a number of organisations including the Na- tional Lottery, Golding Homes, Gal- lagher Group, and Maidstone Council and set to work a few months ago clearing rubbish and planting flower beds. Soldiers from Invicta Barracks and InvolveMaid- stoneVvolunteers also helped with the digging. Now their work is paying off as
the garden is thriving with colour- ful flowers and tasty produce. The first cauliflowers have just been har- vested and the tomatoes and pump- kins are growingwell. Alog cabin has been installed and
water engineers Mac Mole, of Sut- ton Valence, provided a water sys-
tem. To celebrate their success, the gardening team threw a Big Lunch party at the garden with a barbecue, face painting and family games. The group has also just been
awarded charity status. The garden has been no small achievement for mum-of-four Nikki (35), who suf- fers with Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome. She said: “This project is not just about providing a place where people can feel physically fit-
ter but emotionally better too. I know what it’s like to feel lonely and see these revitalised allotments as a place for people to meet and chat and exchange a very welcome hello. “W’ve cleared tons of rubbish, the classroom is now in place and the main footpath is also taking shape. We have cauliflowers, sweetcorn, pumpkins and more fruit and veg- etables are beginning to grow.”
