Rogue trader alert as man, 90s, is targeted

RESIDENTS are being warned about rogue traders at work in the area after a man in his 90s was tar- geted in Maidstone. Police say the elderly man was

asked to pay a large lumpsumin ad- vance for repairs to his drive in Mote Avenue. Two men called at his house on Thursday (July 7) and returned at around 1pm on Monday (July 10) when they are said to have de- manded a larger amount of cash in advance of the work being started. The victim then went to his bank to withdraw the money. Twomen fromMaidstone, aged 58

and 28, and a 16-year-old boy, from Wales, have now been arrested on suspicion of fraud. Chief Inspector Mick Gardner

said: “We are treating this as an iso- lated case but would like to remind people how they can stay safer in their homes.” The Kent Police officer said that precautions householders can take include: - Locking back doors and win-

dows before answering your front door. Never leave your front door

unattended. If you need to get some- thing, close it until you return. - Using a spyhole and askwhothe

caller is; then keep the door on the chain. - Check their identification, even if

they have a pre-arranged appoint- ment. - If you doubt the caller is genuine,

ask them to leave and come back at a time convenient to you and when you've had a chance to ask someone to be with you.

Youcan also contact Trading Stan-

dards with their vehicle details, com- pany name, contact details and any other information you have. - Before allowing any work to be carried out, it is best to obtain a quote or a second quote from a recognised firm. - Do not pay anyone for work be-

fore it is carried out, and certainly never go to the bank to draw out cash if a lift is offered by the people who knock on the door.

News Thief sentence

A 21-year-old man who stole more than £2,000 of equipment from a Maidstone builder’s merchant was handed a suspended jail sentence. Kallum Andy Paul Young was sen- tenced at Mid Kent Magistrates Court after he denied theft and fraud, but was found guilty of the offences. The court heard that inNovember

last year, Young, of Amherst Road, TunbridgeWells, made a false rep- resentation that he worked for a gar- dening business under someone else’s name, intending to make a gain of £905. Between November 29 and De- cember 20, he stole a hydraulic breaker unit worth £2,340 from a builder’s merchant in Buckland Hill. Magistrates sentenced Young to

81 days in prison, suspended for 12 months, and ordered him to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work in the next 12 months. He must also pay £3,245 compensation and £500 costs.
